The time is NOW. This was not on my retirement agenda. But that ‘resist’ voice in my head from the early 70’s has awoken. No kings…not then…not now….not ever.

Yeah while it doesn't change the message of Barry McGuire's iconic song, keep in mind he became a fanatical right-wing Christian singer. (even if his goofy Xtian song "Cosmic Cowboy" is amusing fun)

I have to say, I met Barry McGuire in person in a small church in San Diego in the mid-70’s. He had just came out with his best and a double album. He gave a free concert to all 200 of us with the doors open to the outdoors. He gave a one-man concert with acoustic guitar and piano in a tee shirt and jeans. It was amazing! He played “Eve of Destruction”, but by then it had become even more meaningful to him as a prophetic song. I know of at least one man who was not a church goer who walked in the back door during the concert because he had heard Barry’s music. He looked like he had had a hard life in spite of being young. He stayed for the concert and came down front to talk with Barry at the end. I know for a fact that Barry prayed with him personally and he got saved. But the thing that impressed me the most was that Barry went out to his car and brought back another of his new album and told him that he wanted the man to have it for free. I have never seen any kind of famous singer of any kind do that before or since. He had a good heart and was not any kind of a weird fanatic. Just a good kind man who loved God and his fellow man.

Schmendryck's avatar

Friend of mine in California was actually in a congregation with him, somewhere, years ago. Not a bad word about him. Let's be clear I never said McGuire was a "bad" person, he may or may not be, at this late stage, let's hope his faith is consistently practiced & not "directed" to conform to a narrow political focus, it's just not a safe assumption that his politics are accurately reflected in a song from over 50 years ago.

Same for me Eileen! One of the Felons golf courses is about a mile away from where I live. It’s really just a Country Club where cretins dine. I’d like to be on the edge off the grass outside the place and have a No Kings sign.

Problem being I’ll probably get arrested and next birthday I’ll be 70.

I should do it though but I’m frightened I might be on his property. I’m not walking onto the road just on the grass next to the road.

I have to parse this out. My daughter isn’t around and my other daughter is gone. So no I’d be out there alone.

With the tariffs I think many of us are going to do a bit of a forced boycott...our disposable income is going to go down which will result in a lot less purchasing power and I think more than just the 10-50% changes due to tariffs on clothing, groceries (because of the steel and aluminum). My home owner's and auto insurance went way up last year because of climate change and I am sure they will both go up again once the tariffs actually all go into effect, and thar really diminishes my disposable income and does not provide any jobs for anyone, or help the economy in any way...those premiums go to keep the insurance companies profitable and while that's great for them they do not need anymore salespersons or adjusters to take my money and it means I have way less to spend at Walmart which at some point has to translate in their needing fewer workers. I am in a lower income bracket and pretty much already spend my income only on groceries and household necessities and Walmart is the only store within 65 miles so it would be hard and probably counter productive for me to shop anywhere else (gas, wear and tear on my car and even in the bigger town there aren't many non chain grocery stores). But I am really trying to not buy anything from Amazon. Because I am so far from any actual stores except farm stores, in the past I have relied on Amazon for a lot of things and so far this year all I've ordered are a few $.99 Kindle books (I also am not near a decent library). I am retired but I know that none of my children would feel comfortable with participating in a general strike....there is just too much retaliation in the work place and it's just too scary a time for them to lose their jobs and therefor their health insurance. I know the Chamber of Commerce and others say there is a worker shortage, but not in positions that my kids would qualify for and again, we are in a small very very maga town and everybody knows every body and if you're not maga and don't go to church it's really hard to get a job.

I thought our library belonged to a similar state wide consortium but it turns out we don't. I don't know if it's a matter of funding or if they really just don't want locals to have access to all the radical books the big libraries have. I read things like Agatha Christie and Alexander McCall Smith but also Robin Wall Kimmer and Tom Holt and my latest "find" was Ella Minnow Pea which my son told me about and he was able to get it from his library but I could not so I bought it from Thrift Books...turns out I highly recommend it.. a short read written in 2001 and weirdly reflects a whole lot of what is going on today. It would be considered quite radical by many. And then there are real history books like The Warmth of Other Suns and historical fiction like Four Winds which tell the truth about some of the past in the US and so my 99.9% maga county folks would not like anyone reading them.

Learning is essentially the nourishment of interests, it is a basic of living.

Developing interests involves exploring, and that involves discovery. As learning takes root it becomes all kinds of fun, and some of it can be as vicarious (and passive) as watching a sports event. Learning does not need to always be about learning how to do or build something, even learning about someone's life that you'd never heard about can be entertaining.

Not meaning to be preachy, just ruminating...

I appreciate y our comment. I recently (well I guess it was last year!) read the book The Warmth of Other Suns. If you have not read it, it is a true account of basically three Black American who fled the Jim Crow south to the north (well one went to California but that was out of the south). I have not read many books about the racism that existed in the south and for me this was a real eye opener, especially the parts about Florida. At the time the book was written one of the folks it followed was still alive (in 2010). I don't know if she still is, but to me that fact that she lived very much during my lifetime and in the same nation as I did but in a totally different world was, again eye opening. And something that also made me think about a lot of things is that many many many white folks who grew up in the south during this time are also still alive and they have passed their culture on to the next generation and their culture includes blatant racism and disdain for education. I really have no idea how to overcome this in our nation. Sadly your neighbors will continue to vote for trump or vance or whoever fox news tells them to vote for no matter how much their voting is against their self interest. I truly get amazed any time I see any person of color from any of the southern states get elected to anything. You'd think with areas where there is a relatively high percentage of Black voters it would be sort of a no brainer, but with gerrymandering it continues to be amazing. I'm in Missouri and the folks around me will only believe what is on fox news...everything else is a lie, even if there are videos of trump saying or doing something, it's still a lie. We are the poorest district in the state and our representatives are quite proud of that. They have no interest in increasing the financial well being or health or education of the folks who live here, and the people don't want any of that either. I don't know what will happen if food stamps and heating assistance and rental assistance are cut off, but I do know they will blame it on Biden. So I understand your frustrations! I hold on to the hope that in the rest of the nation there are places where there are voters who will actually vote in the next election and there will be many who have realized voting for trump was a disaster and things will turn around. And rather than focus any of my efforts locally I feel my meager resources are better used in areas where there is a good chance to flip seats.

Hello, I've been following Meidas Touch since January 6 because I sensed the evolution of the United States; we Europeans are steeped in the dramatic history of our continent in the 20th century, and history - which we're lucky enough to learn - has, for the most part, taught us to spot dangerous political situations.

The attack on the Capitol immediately reminded me of the Munich putsch, Hitler's attempt to seize power by force in Bavaria in 1923.

Unfortunately, what followed confirmed my fears.

What's going on in your country is nationalistic, xenophobic, anti-science totalitarianism.

And it's no longer funny, it's frightening.

What's left of the free world is watching, supporting and admiring you.

As the Boss says - Come on up for the Rising.

The Rising," a song by Bruce Springsteen, can be interpreted in several ways, with its core themes centered around faith, hope, and resilience in the face of adversity, particularly in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks. The song can be seen as a call to rise up as a Community, find strength in each other, and honor the fallen. Additionally, it can be understood as a metaphor for personal and spiritual ascent, a journey towards redemption and rebirth.
