I have lived in Germany for 35 years and have become a German citizen because of the unsettling trends in American politics that began with George Bush, Jr. and the Evangelical movement. I am still deeply concerned about my country, but am dismayed at how many Americans "bought" the Trump "art of the Deal" after experiencing his brand of governance during his first administration. The unfolding Constitutional crisis is of grave concern here in Germany and is a source of consternation throughout the European Union. The Germans ask themselves how the nation that brought democracy to them can be so light-headed in throwing it away at home. I am reminded of the statement by the German philosopher Dietrich Bonhöffer: "Against stupidity we are defenseless."
