Not because they’re perfect. But because their presence says: I’ve been there. I still believe.

Hill Harper entering this race hits deeper than politics—it echoes something older, something we’ve nearly forgotten: that leadership can rise from love, from pain, from people who remember what it’s like to be left out.

It’s not just bold—it’s devotional. A kind of sacred risk.

And whether or not he wins, the signal has already been sent:

We are allowed to hope again.

For whoever needed that.

I hit post in haste, besides hope we need positive actions to go along with it for the betterment of society. My mind is racing with all that’s going on right now. I’m wanting to go to protest but I am 68 and I am not able to stand for long periods of time. I spend most of my time reading the latest news from the internet. I can comment and cheer on the protesters that are out there having their voices heard.

This hits hard—and it needs to. Because what’s happening in Michigan is not some policy debate in a D.C. think tank—it’s a five-alarm fire in the lives of working families. Trump’s brand of “leadership” is a Molotov cocktail of cruelty, chaos, and cartel politics, and Michigan’s been used as both the testing ground and the target.

You nailed the stakes: this isn’t governance—it’s sabotage in a suit. Trump and his billionaire cronies like Musk aren’t failing to fix the system; they’re weaponizing it. Tariffs, deportations, and gutting of research labs? That’s not economic strategy—that’s systemic vandalism.

But here’s what’s *most* important: you highlighted hope *with credibility.* Dr. Abdul El-Sayed isn’t just throwing slogans around—he’s walking in with a track record, a diagnosis, and a treatment plan. And unlike the hollow strongmen in MAGA cosplay, he actually *shows up* for the people he's asking to represent. Free eyeglasses for kids. Expanded health access. A politics grounded in dignity, not division.

One thing that deserves louder emphasis? **Trump’s normalized inhumanity.** Mass deportations without due process. Targeting of legal immigrants. Extermination camps. These are not policy excesses—these are human rights violations, and we must name them as such. It’s not just Michigan on the line. It’s the moral spine of the nation.

Also worth underscoring: **the silence from so-called moderates.** Where are the non-MAGA Republicans? Where are the corporate Dems? Abdul is filling a vacuum they helped create. That should shake them.

This is the kind of storytelling we need more of—clear, moral, and unflinching. It’s not just informative. It’s a call to conscience.

Subscribed. Shared. And standing with Michigan.

If enough progressive democrats are elected they can overwhelm the old guard democrats and their agenda of implementing the Republican Agenda which they have done for the past 50 years. The old guard democrats continue to belittle and discount Bernie and AOC either overtly or covertly.

Do people even realize how many of their favorite (?) singers and actors support Trump? I think someone posted a list. But Wayne Gretzky supported Trump. He was born in Brantford, Ontario, Canada. The city used to have a proud sign birthplace of Wayne Gretzky. Not sure what has happened to that sign but I know Canadians are extremely angry with him and have let him know.

Carrie Underwood and Luke Bryan support Trump. Well, I have let them know I will never listen to their songs again and I am boycotting American Idol as they are judges there. Dwayne Johnson also supports Trump. No more movies with him in it.

We need leaders whose agenda is to serve the people of the country no matter their gender, race or religion. I do not see a name or a religion in this candidate or any candidate. I listen to the words and then look at their history and what they have focused on up until today. This candidate wrote the book on Medicare for All. He is Physician. He is thoughtful and passionate to create a framework in Michigan that will serve the people. He is also endorsed by Bernie Sanders who does not see religion or race or gender. Democracies across the globe do not elect and reject candidates based on race or gender or religion. We have done so for far too long and what has happened is our pool of candidates has shrunk and grown stagnant. May the best American citizen win!

campaigns funded by the wealthy and embedded prejudice will be the death knell to our democracy and our futures (obviously as this is in play for all to see today) -- ss

so when our current crisis is done, we need to pour into the streets to rip out the root and demand it stop as well as demand gun control, so our babies don't fear ending up being splattered skin, bone and blood on their classroom walls --

and demand equality for we are entrenched in a self-destructive cycle of prejudice that has been deeply normalized over the past 250 years we as people have no discomfort being outwardly judgmental of candidates unless they are standard issue white male --

it is a tumor that has grown fatal to our democracy for it has resulted in what we now complain about -- a stagnant shrinking pool from which we can draw our leaders whether it be politics or any industry -- prejudice is how we got where we are in fact not over a week or month but over hundreds of years to the point it is a visceral response to anyone or anything that is "different" based on fear, ingrained fear --

and demand removal of the Electoral College which only dilutes and in turn expunges what is in fact the will of the people in every single election --

and demand health care for all --- and affordable pharmaceuticals -- and demand affordable day care and sustainable minimum wage for all workers especially our day care workers and those who care for our elderly --

we need to look with great urgency at other democracies where the people are thriving and their children score at the top in academic learned in schools where "lock down" drills are not part of their experience --

we have so much to get done but we need PROGRESSIVE LEADERS to get there sooner than later -- actually may I posit if we don't start looking seriously at the PROGRESSIVE LEADERS we are doomed as a democracy

Lady Emsworth's avatar

Well, I have to agree that the electoral system in the USA is really weird- difficult to understand and easy to manipulate. I wouldn't actually call it "progressive" to want to change it. I suspect that once again money and power is at the bottom of all the reluctance to change.

I would be just as interested to know as much as possible about a candidate who was Jewish, Christian, Hindu or Atheist.

Expand full comment
RAISSA's avatar

How would focusing on religion have prevented the rise of Trump and all his sycophants. I don't even know what all of them identify with when it comes to religion. Why is religion being brought up at all? Of course, we must question and analyze candidates. That is a foregone conclusion. What I see is focus on religion triggered by a wholly qualified candidate's name. it seems if the candidates skin color or name arouses what I believe to be unfounded suspicion then it is okay to focus on his religion not his record and contributions as a human being to date. My goodness Trump is a convicted felon and if his name was Abdullah his tenure as POTUS would cause prejudice against people of Arab descent. However, Trump the evilest person in the world tying for Putin will leave this role and what he has done to us will never taint or infringe or cause suspicion if another white male with an Anglo Saxon "American" name comes forward.

RAISSA's avatar

Would it be easier to be elected if one were an atheist then?

Expand full comment
Lady Emsworth's avatar

Oh, I doubt it. Not in today's America. To most voters, your religion defines you. Atheism is just confusing!

Expand full comment
RAISSA's avatar

I don't think "your religion" defines you to the world as a candidate or a person any more than atheism defines a person. It is a personal belief system.

My religion does not define me to the world. But there are prejudiced people who define those who came before me by my religion and for centuries have oppressed and judged and limited opportunities to those who practice my religion based on my religion.

A religion or belief system should be viewed without prejudice for it defines me to myself and it is how I navigate my life in the world. It is personal.

And a belief system is a belief system whether it is bowing down to a tree to celebrate its life or to a supreme being or a greater power or whatever anchors you.

Atheism is a belief system that settles one on their approach to their lives. That should not be confusing to anyone unless they are seeking a belief system or religion for the purpose of unfound and unsubstantiated judgement and slander and have judged atheism is not a threat to them personally whereas some may see it as a reason to judge.

Bottom line judgment and prejudice are wrong, and we need to be more sensitive and aware of our prejudices of which we all carry. Silence is better than speech when it comes to judging another human being for most judgment is based on prejudice especially if we speak of it with no regard for the harm it does to do so.

America is stuck in the stage of maturity no more advanced than adolescence and a democracy cannot survive or thrive when in the care of adolescents. Parallel to our experience democracies across the globe do not see race, creed or gender. They choose the best leaders, and the result is their citizens are thriving as well as their children for their nations are stewarding democracy as a mature society that has reached full self-actualization. Do we choose to grow up or not? We have no time to think about it; we need to drop all prejudices which breeds fear that is further incited and manipulated by oligarch owned media or kiss our democracy goodbye. That choice will be tragic for our children. May the best qualified American win all races going forward. We are all Americans after all. Right?
