And it sounds like you have folks involved that will let all the local news media know..at first they may not ever report anything but I imagine at some point they will almost have to or maybe ads can be taken out letting the public know what is going on...churches are allowed to put ads in most small town papers so your group or similar groups should be allowed to also.
