You realize there’s a lot of us Baby Boomers out here yearning to keep up with the truth and most of us on SS can’t afford to pay subscriptions and worry if our income will be taken away any given minute. I’ll be more than happy to get a paid subscription when I know I’ll be able to buy food next week. I come here to hear the truth in a space I’m not afraid to be

It’s amazing how unwilling so many Americans are to accept the reality that republicans actually only represent the 1%, not the majority of Americans. The republicans have been taken over by radical fascist billionaires and their christofascist buddies. Talking to family/friends who vote “R” is like spitting in the wind, unfortunately. The mess blows back in their faces but it’s someone else’s fault.

vcragain's avatar

I'm a Brit & can't vote here in the US, but what I see is that people belong to the Republican party largely because they think they belong to the upper crust of society OR wish to be seen that way ! In UK the class structure is blatant & ancient, and here in the US it is not regarded as a 'class' thing, but the effect is the same - the bottom level humans who vote Repub are doing it not because they believe they are better off financially but because they want to 'belong' or be identified with those they see as 'upper class' or 'better' than the riffraff ! Thinking of Democrats as "almost-Commies" makes their decision to vote RW the obvious choice. Funny how now that the Russian system has gone over to the oligarchs, that system is no longer 'Commie' but attractive to RW'ers here in the US with putin as the ultimate oligarch !

Dr. Eileen Antalek's avatar

You are absolutely correct! And of course the irony gets richer because they kept calling the Democrats "the elites"--meaning the educated, rich people, when in fact they're the ones who always advocate for the poor and uneducated to GET them educated and improve their financial status. Oh, dear, the sheer stupidity of it all...

They hate anyone who is not straight, white, and male. If you read Project 2025, it is quite evident what they want, and it is terrifying.

Nicely put. Truth is Politics is not for the everyday Jane or Joe except in extraordinary and extremely rare ( working class poor) cases. I keep in mind there are not now nor have there been nor will there be any paupers on Capitol Hill.

These people don't "run" to represent Americans as a rule. Of course, we have witnessed a precious few who are genuine and who work for freedom and Democracy despite being well off to begin with. Rare indeed.

From my observations through the decades, I've been unimpressed with many of the talking heads. The job is to get to the "carnival" and grab the brass ring. By the time they've parlayed their local yokel operations from their home states to the Hill their spouses no longer have to hide their quickie jaunts to shopping at Tiffany's or Rodeo Drive.

And I'm still waiting for Maxine Waters to clean up her district and Hal Rogers to lift the poorest region in Kentucky out of poverty. Old Hal's been at it since 1981. And "Aunt" Marlene? She's been in the game since the 70's. These two are representative of all the swells in D.C.

They're "fighting" for this and that and living quite comfortably all the way to the bank. Few of these changelings impress me. The (Politicians, Preachers and Pimps) PPP club never manages to lift folks who need lifting, but by God, they make a good go of "trying," don't they?

Nobody can "try" to sit in a chair. A butt is either in the air or it's in the chair.

Here’s a thought: what if all of us feeling this pinch started writing? Let’s share our perspectives, our life experiences, fears, hopes, and why we’re so passionate about what’s happening, especially with the Trump administration back in power. Substack lets us publish for free, so why not use it to spark conversations and get organized? I love MeidasTouch and other voices here. I can’t afford subscriptions either, but the free access keeps me informed and that’s enough to begin.

We need to raise our voices and build a community. Unity, not division, is our strength. Trump’s base is unrelenting and driven by hate, extremism, and dangerous Christian fundamentalism. They won’t stop in the name of hate; we can’t stop in the name of equality, freedom, democracy, love, and respect for each other and our neighbors. I’m scared too. I’ve been censored on Facebook, LinkedIn, and Reddit, trolled relentlessly. Not for anything radical, just for criticizing Trump and Elon.

I’m done with street protests and in-person resistance. I’m fighting with words now. Substack is where I can speak freely on current events, and I want us to do it together. My account is free, and I’m inviting you to join me. Use your free account write your truth, share it, discuss it, and let’s fight back with our stories. Follow each other, lift each other up. We have to stick together. Who’s with me? Let’s turn our fears into action, our voices into a movement right here, right now. Let’s use everything we’ve got so there’s something left for the future.

Warrior4Justice's avatar

Appreciate all that you are doing! And...as I understand it, we all do whatever we can, whatever we are called to do in whatever form and it all adds up to a massive movement. I believe street protests are powerful because they show visibly, to those in power, the resistance against them and they are also tremendous opportunities for us to feel united, connected and uplifted in this very difficult time. :)

Thank you for stating this. I personally stopped the street protests during Trump's last administration when we were getting flash banged, pepper sprayed, and people were being taken off the street in unmarked cars. I was scared. I give all of my power and support to the ones who are willing to tough it out and if I have to go back out there I will, but for now I will use my words.

I am also a baby boomer and on SS and although I am a paid subscriber, any video here "ad-free" as a subscriber, you get on youtube for free with ads. Every single substack I subscribe to paid or unpaid asks to "become a paid subscriber" in their emails. It's a business. But every video here as far as I know is on the Meidas Touch youtube channel (so much content from so many contributors you couldn't possibly watch it all) including Legal AF (plus they have a separate Legal AF MTN you tube channel) and Ron's Uncovered with Anthony Davis on Wed (which is why he doesn't publish the newsletter on Wed). Anyone can come here as an unpaid subscriber and read post and comment. That's why there is brainfog spam and Pete/petey/peter the pizza troll.

The only difference I note is on Ron's newsletter during the week only non-paid get the first half, and I get the rest, but on Sunday every member here paid or unpaid gets the entire thing. The man is online 14 hours a day getting every piece of news he can for us and he deserves every single dime for the scum of the earth he has to wade through so we don't have to. I am very empathetic to all of those who can't pay. MTN is the most expensive substack and I didn't pay at the beginning but now I do so I see the few differences.

Bottom line, the paid subscribers help to pay for their 30 member or more staff they have grown so much and have to make their money from YT ads online or paid subs here. Ben and his brothers, Popok,, Ron quit their jobs to do this fulltime. And there are certain perks for paying. That's life. and it's not unfair. MTN is one of THE most generous with their free content. You can read and comment. That is a perk for everyone.

I honestly don't know what precipitated this convo because I can't go through all the comments, but I signed in to see the comments and yours was first so that's why I'm responding to you but I hear this comment from others too.

No one is taking our food or home or SS to be here. Most of us are here because it's a great community of like minded people internationally and a safe space to speak. I mean this from my heart Gale. You don't owe anyone an explanation if you are not paid. You get the same respect from me, and your opinion is worth just as much as anyone else's. Have a good Sunday. . 🙏

Same here. In fact, I launched a tirade recently on Qasim Rashid's substack asking why so many writers on this platform also have full time jobs as lawyers, journalists etc., yet they plead poverty and put their Substacks behind paywalls. Substack itself charges no fees, they can publish here for free, but most Substack writers charge readers $5 to $40 a month. Many writers have literally thousands of paid subscribers, so that's a lot of money to pay for what are mostly op-eds.

Expand full comment
Kathy H's avatar

Substack writers have to constantly remind people that they are subscriber supported because nothing else keeps the lights on like in corporate backed media. I know some BRILLIANT authors hate doing it, promoting themselves or begging, lol, but it has to be done in independent media. People's ability to pay varies a lot. I am on a real tight budget & there a lot of good publications coming out now. It's kind of a cool, democratic thing that people can pay what they are willing & able & most, if not all of the content is available for everyone. We're in this together, we all have strengths & ways to be a part. Meidas Mighty!

In order to comment on some posts you must have a paid subscription. And there are a few writers who do tease you and only allow you to read the first few paragraphs and ask you to pay. As Chris mentions, you can subscribe for free and that in general will open up one or two full articles a week and more commonly, you will be notified and able to listen to videos. Glenn Kirschner who I love says everybody gets all of his content for free but I decided to pay to support him anyway. If I am able to, I am happy to.

I have a couple who I have decided not to renew because I don't feel I'm get much content and it's not worth my money. I may have gotten the first year at a discount and will let it run out. Then there are those who want to keep the spam and trolls out of their comments

I have followers and subscribers and have no idea why. I'm a nobody who comes to read and comment. I don't even know how this place works! Like "notes". I'm not trying to get my message out. I'm commenting so I don't jump out my window! 🙏
