It is. I live in a suburb of Houston and I rarely venture into town. Everyone here carries guns and drives Tesla trash can trucks. If you want to call it a truck. Smh! It looks like it came right out of Minecraft.

I live in a ruby red area about 30 miles north of San Antonio. Most of the cities in Texas are blue, but the rest of the state is red. All of us blue dots in Texas need to stick together!

Thank you, I’ll try. As soon as I'm able I want to move to a blue state.

I saw a report recently stating that CA is losing 10,000 residents because working folks can't afford to live here anymore; top states they were moving to included TX, AL, FL and some other red states I can't remember now. Wondered if those folks could help your state and other red states turn blue.

Expand full comment
Texasgrrl's avatar

That's been going on for many years. If they were going to turn it it would've been done already. This state is red through and through. It may be that many of those transplants didn't vote. It's just a guess. Funny, I was born in Fullerton California. My father was an aerospace engineer and moved us to Texas so he could work at NASA. I wish he had stayed in California but he did what was right at the time. The cost of living is becoming comparable to California now. It's ridiculous how much the rents are and house costs are skyrocketing! I don't have any idea of where to go after I sell my family home.

Expand full comment
Oaktown's avatar

One big reason housing is so expenses is between 25-44% of homes are owned by investors (depending on how you define "investors," whether small or large), and that's happening in every state. Senator Jon Ossoff called this out during a recent speech in GA.

I feel for you; can't imagine being a woman in TX now with their horrid law giving anyone $10,000 for simply accusing a fellow Texan of assisting a woman in exercising her reproductive rights. The worst repercussion of the R party's govt. takeover is the loss of trust on all fronts: pitting people against each other, defaulting on treaties, lying to the public, and turning on our allies.

Expand full comment
Texasgrrl's avatar

Yeah, it's getting bad. I never in my life thought I'd see this happening. I get offers to buy my house that my father left me all the time from those “investors”. They lowball me. I wouldn't sell to them anyway. I don't want to be part of the problem. I thankfully have my son and daughter who help me. I also have a sister in Denver. I'd love to live in Colorado again as I have lived there a few times but the cost of living has gotten high! Pretty soon there won't be anywhere that's affordable to live.

The fact that the Texas state government will pay someone who reports a woman who is exercising her right to handle her reproductive rights is utterly disgusting and wrong! All these politicians would make Hitler proud.

No voluntary filing or payment of taxes to support a lawless, cruel, lying, stupid, greedy, white male government.

The Federal Government and the union of states to make the nation of USA is no longer the government of, by, for the People. The Constitution, 3 equally powerful branches of the Federal Gov with checks and balances, law/order, honorable public servants, democratic republic is no more. Federal Government has breached the contract ratified by my state centuries ago and I no longer recognize an obligation to pay for anything except our military. Judicial Branch cannot enforce their rulings or the laws. Legislative Branch is controlled by puppets of trump/oligarchs/musk/MAGA Mob-they are afraid to lose a JOB so they give everything over to the Executive Branch. Legislative Branch did not Impeach trump TWICE. They do not pass laws to protect people from guns, abortion bans, corrupt US Supreme Court judges who take gifts from oligarchs and will not recuse themselves for conflict of interest. Legislative Branch confirms unqualified, partisan hacks to run Executive Branch Cabinets and lifetime judgeships. Executive Branch with new immunity while President and after Presidency for undefined "official duties" rules DC by Executive orders, pardons 1500 violent 1/6/2021 insurrectionists, will pardon anyone loyal to Kingdom Trump.

On and on, lawless, cruel, Mob Bosses enact King Donald's orders on tattooed people, students, law firms, visa holders, protesters, media, immigrants, females, DEI, federal workers etc. ALL on our IRS TAXES and US Treasuries.

THIS is not the deal ratified by my state and therefore I'm out. IRS taxes will not support anything but our military and never sent to support authoritarian, oligarchic or theocratic rulers more ruthless, cruel, richer, more powerful, greedy than England's King George III in 1776.

I love horses but somehow I never had good luck with them. I don’t know if they sensed I was a novice but I’ve had horses step on my foot and lean on me so ended up with a really painful injury but not broken thankfully (I was 13). Then went horseback riding at a camp in the mountains and since I picked a horse named Diablo, it lived up to its name and ran away with me down the trail back to the barn. I barely hung on and the ranch hand came galloping after us. It was a scene out of a western, funny but not.

When are some of these self-proclaimed macho men, in the GOP and MAGA, going to stand up to Trump, FOR OUR COUNTRY, DEMOCRACY, CONSTITUTION, RULE OF LAW?! So far they have proven to be lying spineless traitors, who continue to kiss Trump's ass for a buck, and Iawless, unlimited power! How do they even look their children, families, and constituents in the eye, while betraying them all every day. All will be recorded in history, as a complete corrupt disgrace, traitors to the United States of America, who chose to turn their backs on the USA, betray us, and team with communist, murderous Russia, and has stomped all over our Constitution and laws.

You are right The Amish have treated women very poorly .the Amish farmer guy was trying to tell me we are not perfect far from it but if they wake up to how bad Trump is maybe they'll start to modernize. The state of Pennsylvania has to enforce the laws. I know in New York state the Orthodox Jewish have similar issues with women's rights and poor educations coming from some of the ULTRA (unlikely to reach agreement) yeshiva's prehistoric viewpoints.

To most of us it looks like cultish Behavior, to them they think they're protecting Purity and respect to God. Keep growing organic food and waking up is the best I could hope for them.

I was in essence their lawyer -- my brother and I represented the township with the most Amish per square inch than any other -- Wilmington Twp, Lawrence County. They sold their milk to a cheese factory so it did not have to be pasteurized. I wrote the zoning ordinance to keep the township in the 19th century. They opposed all sanitation, paved roads, etc. The twp supervisors were "English" farmers who hired a lot of Amish labor.

The twp sold them a school district after Yoder v Wisconsin. Schools taufght by 13 year old girls. One room schools.

Our late friend sold their furniture and toys world wide -- to department stores in Paris, London, NY. She represented Amish communities as far as South America and Canada. They took their goods via the bus to Pittsburgh. When I was taking the bar, I was the only English person on the bus... They bought and sold livestock at auctions. As a kid, my uncle and I would attend. My uncle spoke Yiddish to them. I took German in school. Ag the time, there were no Jews in the township but we had a stable -- and hired them intermittently. I'm sure they knew we were Democrats (my dad was the DA) but they wanted my brother and me to represnnt them.

They had a lot of intermarriage. Short life expectancies. Used us to try to defeat the dower interest, would not devise to daughters. They lost a lot of their kids, who can elect to become "English" and are forever shunned.

I was court appointed in "blue baby" cases, cases when necessary medical treatement was rejected. They had a major schism when the wife of a bishop had to be taken to a hospital.

They refused to appear in court but they always voted and according to my brother participated in stuff like the zoning hearing board. I left in about 1979 but my brother represented when he retired in 2018.

Thus the cheese factory.

No serwers. The Department of Environmental Resuources rerquired "perp" tests. No public water.

In other townships we represented we set uo seoerate sewage authorities. Paved all roads.

They voted straight Republican after the IRS sold off horses garnished for failing to pay taxes. Our bar association wrote an amics brief on their behelf. Also lost a case requring Amish employers to wthold FICA taxes.

After I left, my brother represented several other towsnships that had Amish populations.
