It's funny. The hypocrisy that exists in our country, I mean.
My husband is suffering with dementia. His brain is slowly dying. He was diagnosed a few years ago, and CA DMV immediately revoked his driver's license, which exasperated his agitation and confusion and made my caregiving life hell. They should have a transition program to ease this consequential and necessary decision, which is indeed necessary for his safety and for that of others.
At this point, he has lost his ability to understand what's said to him, to find the correct words he wants to say, to complete the simplest tasks, to know who he's talking to, to remembering what's happening in real time, to control his inappropriate behaviors.
This insidious disease sneaks up on you. At first. you don't understand what's happening. You don't see what's coming. The world gets turned upside down.
Now, we're in the position that we can't get help via Medcal for in-home care because we're just over the poverty level on social security income. We can't afford the 10K a month for memory and long term care. There is no cure. The only help for family caregivers is support groups. Some couples are getting legal separations in order to be destitute enough to get financial assistance.
Let's consider next our current president and what's being said about him. "He's an idiot, he's an imbecile, he's a moron, He's an addlepated old man. He lies. He's an embarrassment. He can't control himself. He's sick in mind and body." Well, he never was a good person in the first place and I do not support him, but why the cruelty against an obvious person suffering from dementia?
Why isn't it a national emergency to get him diagnosed and removed from office before he harms more people on the planet? What is the malignant hypocrisy that's allowing this to continue any longer?
Ronald Reagan had Nancy to get us through his last days a President, before the disease totally incapacitated him. This president, who is still capable of "show timing" as it's called in the dementia community, only has those who are manipulating him for purposes of money,
greed, power, and for gaining insidious control over the rest of us.
What on earth is stopping us from facing reality and doing something about it, since our future lives depend on our taking immediate action? Hello, fellow citizens...it's time to get real!
