as an Afghan veteran who stood with the United States and was later left behind despite so many promises from the current government, I read these parts about allies very differently. for people like us, promises are not just political words. they were decisions we made with our lives,our families,and sometimes our blood.
I don't blame ordinary Americans for this. Many Americans supported us,served beside us,and believed that their government would keep its word. My disappointment is with the people in government who made those commitments and then allowed so many of their former allies to remain in uncertainty.
Your point about accountability really matters here. If a government asks people to stand with it in dangerous times,then it should not suddenly forget them when the political situation changes. With wildfires and parks being torn down our Wildlife doesn’t stand a chance. Our grandchildren will be seeing pictures of animals and marine life in books because they no longer exist.

Democrats across Germany have viewed this development with horror. I believe that if this becomes a nationwide trend, the situation here will mirror what you are experiencing in the USA. The experiences you are currently going through with the Trump administration likely still lie ahead for us democrats in Germany. May God protect us all.

So sorry that your country is now dealing with this hatefulness. It's beyond comprehension that people have so quickly forgotten, or ignore, the lessons history teaches us. How can anyone who suffered in Germany after hitler support this vileness? Many lived under communist rule as late as 1989. People as young as fifty lived their childhood under communism. Older voters lived it even longer yet 44% of Germans voted for this? It seems the whole world has gone mad and I'm at a loss as to how to get sanity back.
I pray that those who didn't vote for this can manage to keep it from coming to majority party. As an American I can say I share your pain, fear and horror. It's a horrible way to try to live your life, constantly waiting for your democracy to be destroyed. It zaps all the joy out of life knowing that at any moment you could be labeled an enemy of the state for nothing more than speaking out in a forum like this or casting a vote for a Democrat. At nearing 68 I could never imagine I would see America literally being destroyed.

Dear Sharon, your warm words really cheered me up. I am a 75-year-old pensioner, but I have a lovely granddaughter and a little great-grandson who is five months old. I love my children dearly and wouldn't want to leave behind a chaotic mess for them when I eventually pass away. Elections took place this weekend in the part of Germany that was formerly under Russian administration. I live near the Rhine—in western Germany—and I remember my grandparents telling me how much good the Americans did for us, especially for the children. Perhaps I am too old to fully grasp everything, but I am glad that I got connected to the internet back when I was a young woman, allowing me to write to you and everyone else today. Sending you a warm embrace and wishing you nothing but the best—especially good health.
I am hoping this election shakes a lot of Germans up and they think, "I don't want Germany to go the same route as America has gone".

Seems to be a common mistake of old men: they think dying their hair dark brown or black makes them look young. Most only do it once.
