"Trump repeatedly stated his support for Orban while JD Vance and Marco Rubio each made separate trips to Hungary to campaign for the corrupt autocrat."

I'm glad Hungarian voters were smart enough to see through the MAGA bullshit. Too bad American voters can't.

Jane in NC's avatar

I hope Donnie, JD [not his real name] and Vladimir are all enjoying their egg facials.

Linda Harris's avatar

Not to mention Kushner, Witlesskoff, Netanyahu, and Don, jr. (little donny trying to get on his dad's bandwagon wrote a post to the Hungarian people tell them to vote for his father's friend. I am so happy for the Hungarian people. I could never imagine 16 years of trump.

Little Donny is as repulsive as his father. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

Nice picture of our Sec of State looking utterly DRUNK at a dumb fight last night while the negotiations were going on. What an absolute clown show this is and an utter embarrassment.

Marliss Desens's avatar

Remember how Biden's Secretary of State would attend negotiations in person, and Biden would be waiting to be briefed? Rubio and Trump go to a UFC match and let three people with no negotiating skills and inadequate cultural knowledge handle matters.

Andan Casamajor's avatar

What did he expect, sending Larry, Moe, and Curly to Islamabad?

Mary's avatar

It's more proof of their total stupidity but we get proof of that every day.

Ann Marie's avatar

Different time. Different priorities. 🤯

Marliss Desens's avatar

We must always point out what proper presidential behavior is and not let Trump continue destroying what should be a high standard.

Linda Harris's avatar

You can go all the way back to the Kennedy days when he never left that room during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Most presidents after that took all crises seriously. They were not out partying and acting like a celebrity. But then they were all educated and had grace to uphold their office with dignity.

Oaktown's avatar

Oh, I think American voters are starting to wake up. Remember, it took Hungarian voters 16 years to wake up in large enough numbers for a landslide opposition to overwhelm all obstacles Orban had put into place during his corrupt rule.

SFGal's avatar

God forbid such is not our slow-witted fate, Oak!

Oaktown's avatar

Numbnuts will never live that long, mercifully.

ramonaj's avatar

I think the younger generation took control. I am so happy for Hungary. The joy on the faces of the people celebrating is so wonderful. Happy day.

Oaktown's avatar

Hoping our younger generation follows suit—and if today's polls are any indication it's looking very good.

JA's avatar

How long before Orban makes a trip to Florida, MAL? Bet already in the works?

James Rodell's avatar

Slowly if not surely voters are waking up -- except for the diehards. I feel so good and grateful learning about the the Hungarian peoples' choice.

Sandra Przybylski's avatar

Most American voters see through Trump's BS. MAGA doesn't. Donald lost. Here are some facts. 8M voters were purged in 2024. Biden wrote an EO & a US Treasury Report was issued on Dec 31, 2024, documenting foreign interference in the 2024 election by Russia (bomb threats, AI involvement & disinformation), Iran (Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps), with "US BASED FACILITATORS." As a former Republican, you should know GOP have been rigging elections for decades, fine tuning their craft with Russia. The National Press Club has put out a chart: Rove's Empire of Election Fraud. I will link it below. GOP talk endlessly about VOTER fraud to coverup their ELECTION fraud. Democrats are finally waking up & winning special elections. Every win counts. Every vote counts! So quit complaining & fight for Democracy on your local & state levels, protest, donate, & VOTE! CHECK YOUR REGISTRATION FREQUENTLY TO AVOID BEING PURGED!!!

Mary's avatar

Good advice to check registration frequently. Everyone should check the Secretary of state website in their state to figure out how to check their registration now.

Schmendryck's avatar

As the texts say, "The name Magyar likely derives from the Megyer tribe, the most prominent of the seven tribes, which eventually became the ethnonym for the entire people," so Magyar can legitimately claim to be a "man of the people," unless his name used to be Bernstein or something. But of course the fascist conspiracists will immediately dredge up the ancient presence of "Khazars" among the original Hungarian tribes from whom the name "Hungarian" derives (Oghur-Turkic term Onoğur ["Ten Tribes"]) to immediately combine a handy anti-Jewish conspiracy psychosis with an equally accessible anti-Peter Magyar smear.

Robin D's avatar

I was wondering where you had been. Glad to see you here.

I lurk too and am on so many substacks, and days I just feel defeated and read the posts and don't go in the comments (my fave part with fave posters) but it's just too much. Posts. lives. YT videos. I don't have enough time until I finally read or watch something that usually makes me so incandescent with rage and have to SCREED! Or Scream. Or Laugh so I hide out at my two happy places (Jeff Tiedrich and Andy Borowitz) where you get the poison with a spoonful of sugar and I can laugh...otherwise there are days it's one foot out the window. But we laugh a lot here too.. Yesterday was a good day. Today I saw a picture of the Marmalade Messiah looking a shade of orange I have never seen before.(which means he's white as a ghost from fear and they needed the mortuary make up to cover him ). 🤗 ❤

He probably had a chance until Vance showed up-Putin will be making demands on Trump now! Trump may be called to Moscow for a dressing-down! Plus show him the pics they took-Melania wouldn't like that I guess😳

Fraser's avatar

Good point SF! It seems a combination of guilty conscious and a foreboding about being "found out"! She convinced me right there that she was trying to distance herself from the inevitable!

SFGal's avatar

It may be her long-time former pal Amanda Ungaro is ready for revenge, Fraser.

Susan Raquel's avatar

Yep, melania of all people should know not to interfere with a mother and her son.

Fraser's avatar

I think so SF!

Robin D's avatar

I thought Eric was "Fredo", the dumb one, but now that honor belongs to Jr. Could he be any more blatant in his corruption " vote for my Dad's friend. Viktor Orban will have a line straight to the White House" in that tweet?

And they didn't Donnie Jr. Because they're smart, and they hate him as much as they hate your demented and deranged father 😂

djw's avatar

I'd like to see us show up in the numbers they saw. Our marches so far have been, comparatively, only a drop in the bucket.

SFGal's avatar

Indeed, djw, according to Erica Chenoweth, the massive numbers of ongoing persistent Hungarian civil disobedience protests have been a huge factor impacting Orban's regime, wearing him down with energy, vitality, creativity, and hard-core unity in ever-growing numbers of citizens. We have a long way to go!

djw's avatar

Yeah. I was really disappointed by No Kings 3; that's not nearly enough, as far as I'm concerned.

SFGal's avatar

Truly, we needed a minimum of closer to or over 12 million, djw! What will it take going forward?

WJB Motown's avatar

First thing to do would bring in progressive leadership and a true anti-war.opposition party. Schumer:Jeffries----OUT.

Promise to restore all programs and move towards universal healthcare.

No more corporate BS commitement.

12 million would be a low number!!!

Carol's avatar

So far, starting with Hands Off and then three No Kings, each one has increased in size by at least a million from the one before. Started at 3 million, now up to 8. It seems there is momentum but we have to make sure it continues. Be active!

SFGal's avatar

Initially, we went to the big protests in Sacramento but began to realize the importance of building local community presence and participation and it is stable through the passing of the seasons so far at about 350-400, but on the 28th we had 4500 turn out, largest number so far.

djw's avatar

The thing is, we went from 3 to 7 to 8. We needed to go from 3 to 7 to 12 or more. That's why I was disappointed with 8.

SFGal's avatar

Yes, the incremental increase has been encouraging, Carol -- your name the same as our community Indivisible organizer. We rally every other Saturday downtown but had to cancel for rain yesterday. Perhaps, as djw says above, once MAGAts really start to feel the pain they'll join us!

djw's avatar

Beats me, but I hope the MAGAts start to realize what this is all about.

Earth Day (1970) drew 20 million people. We can - we must - do even better now.

“On April 22, 1970, an estimated 20 million people gathered around the country in one of the largest demonstrations in U.S. history to celebrate the first Earth Day and demand action be taken on a variety of environmental issues.” https://www.zinnedproject.org/news/tdih/first-earth-day/

djw's avatar

And also, if Iran has already blockaded the strait, how are "we" going to "put on a complete blockade"? Has Demento Donnei figured out how to remove their blockade so we can put ours up? And if the point is to remove the blockage, how do a US version improve the situation?

"If there is hope," Winston wrote, "it lies with the proles." "Proles," to me, means, the courageous, indefatigable, and ordinary people of Hungary, and of the world, who exact powerful change by fighting for it and voting for it.

Archie Leach's avatar

proles 1984

+4

In George Orwell's 1984, the "proles" (proletariat) are the uneducated working-class majority comprising roughly 85% of Oceania's population. Living in poverty yet largely free from surveillance, they are viewed as subhuman by the Party, which prevents them from revolting by fostering ignorance, focusing them on menial work, and providing distractions like pornography, betting, and alcohol.

Andan Casamajor's avatar

In other words, pretty much Florida?

Diane's avatar

Thanks for explaining the reference, Archie. Been a long time since"1984"!

djw's avatar

Proud prole here!

Barbara Craig's avatar

The size of Hungary makes it possible to show up in fewer places. Of course more can and should show up in the US, but we are so widely dispersed.

SFGal's avatar

Wow! 1984, Sherry, as I just made a similar kind of literary reference from Huxley's "Brave New World." Dystopia comes in all shades and forms, seeming like we're living -- trying to survive one this very day, gratis Project 2025 + 90 million who didn't vote in 2024.

Kelvin Hobbs's avatar

Excellent. A bit more from the same place:

“But the proles, if only they could somehow become conscious of their own strength, would have no need to conspire.” “Until they become conscious they will never rebel, and until after they have rebelled they cannot become conscious.” "They need only to rise up and shake themselves like a horse shaking off flies. If they chose they could blow the Party to pieces tomorrow morning. Surely sooner or later it must occur to them to do it."

SFGal's avatar

Thank you, Kelvin, for sharing these prescient words so fitting for our times. I keep the following quote from Orwell taped to my computer in plain sight which I'd noted from Marc Elias citing in one of his bulletins some time ago:

Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right.

And Marc adds in closing: This is how democracies die, and it is how Trump plans on killing ours.

Kelvin Hobbs's avatar

SFGal, thank you. Elias is brilliant and an excellent attorney, unbowed by anyone. The quote you shared and keep close at hand is a daily reminder to us all of where we are. In a similar vein, I offer the following, a twin sibling to the source and quote you shared.

“Our Press and our schools cultivate Chauvinism, militarism, dogmatism, conformism and ignorance. The arbitrary power of the Government is unlimited, and unexampled in history; freedom of the Press, of opinion and of movement are as thoroughly exterminated as though the proclamation of the Rights of Man had never been. We have built up the most gigantic police apparatus, with informers made a national institution, and the most refined scientific system of political and mental torture. We whip the groaning masses of the country towards a theoretical future happiness, which only we can.”

Darkness at Noon (1940) by Arthur Koestler, written nine years before 1984, but certainly born of the same concerns arising from WW II and the totalitarian world of madmen such Stalin, Hitler, Mussolini, Franco, and Tojo that enveloped them.

SFGal's avatar

Thank you so much, Kelvin, for the article on Picasso's Guernica that I've printed out in full to read and preserve the enlightening details of its history, in addition to your accompanying thoughts and perspectives shared that help broaden my experience and education. Your care in sharing makes even more valuable the rewards of being a Meidas member, for which I am deeply grateful. You're obviously an extremely well-read and highly-educated individual with whom I cherish your significant most insightful communications. I'm in your debt.

Kelvin Hobbs's avatar

SFGal, you are too kind, really, and my first thought was “likewise, I am sure!”). I managed (helpfully) to delete my post about Guernica (sorry), but I have the link I used: https://tinyurl.com/rcu6bkur. Feel free to re-post it, assigning blame to me if you wish.

I interact here as you do (I think), to learn, to teach (where I can), and to participate in lively and thought-provoking discussions. I learn enough to want to say and you are high on the list of people from who I learn. Thank you for pressing me to think and re-think, and to look beyond the confines of my knowledge for alternative considerations.

I have a fair amount of education (thank you, formerly good US education system) and have (and still) read extensively. I think that the value of knowledge breadth in tandem with depth too often is discounted. Edward de Bono’s lateral thinking. I can get a more complete understanding by drawing from off-topic but related events. In posting Guernica (art), I also thought of music that also would inform me: Woody Guthrie’s This Land is Your Land and Pete Seeger’s Where Have All The Flowers Gone? The bigger the circle I draw, the more places to look for what is hiding in plain sight. Cheers! Kelvin

SFGal's avatar

Indeed, great rewards are found in this community creating new bonds with valued shared experience, perspectives, and insights. I draw my artistic inspiration from Bob Dylan who was influenced by Guthrie and Seeger.

SFGal's avatar

Yes, Marc Elias and Democracy Docket are unparalleled in any era with 89 active lawsuits in 43 states today, having defeated DT 64 times in court previously. Champions of democracy for our dire times.

I've printed out your quotation from Koestler above to keep close by for reference. For what horrors our parental generation fought so valiantly now being minimized and even re-written! Thank you for sharing.

Anastasia Pantsios's avatar

The Ohio GOP is so corrupt and desperate that they're trying to blow up a story about the Democratic candidate for governor, Amy Acton, having been involved in a minor domestic incident 7 years ago, that apparently was mostly an argument after a night of drinking. If you have nothing to say about Ohio's Leslie Wexner's best buddy's best buddy (Les Wexner>Jeffrey Epstein>Donald Trump) then just shut up. The Ohio GOP stole $61 million to destroy our energy infrastructure and then went on to destroy our public schools, then spent a week debating whether to ban drag shows. STFU, Ohio GOP.

We said in response, "Peter Magyar will be tough on migration and anti-woke, but his government will be the opposite of corrupt and pro-Moscow." Looks like his staff got so upset, they told us "SHUT UP" by blocking us. So every time Wilders says that he and his party are "in favor of free speech", all we'll say is "LOL".

Yes, it must have been all the people lining the streets-they have foreseen a run on the palace kind of thing coming-he will go to jail for sure!! Putin will be sleeping in different beds now!!

Fraser, they say dictators are terrified of having done to them, what they do to others. Whatever happens, Putin and the other dictators will never sleep with both eyes closed again. Good. Another one who needs to drop dead ASAP. If Orban, after 16 years (and not for lack of trying...down to owning all the Hungarian media, like what's happening here. He gave Donnie the "Dictator for Dummies playbook") , can be finally voted out...thrown out...too big to rig....and be alive to see how much everyone hated him...that's huge! I don't know much about this new young man, but I wish him and Hungary well. And like Ron said, for Zelensky too...to see it can be done. And for Europe. It was a hopeful day. 🙏

But I fear in his retaliatory ketchup rage DT is gonna take it out on us, the abused domestic violence victims, as some more nasty punishment in days ahead, Robin. Wasn't it Tucker Carlson who'd said "Daddy" was going to give a "vigorous spanking" to whom he perceived as his disobedient children?

I have no doubt SFGal After I read everything, there's not a lot I haven't thought of. It unnerved me that Viktor Orban conceded and left quietly, without histrionics. Garry Kasparov said Hungary did not give him a choice. That he was voted out. But of course cynical me is afraid he won't leave. Like Donnie, who is dug in. I am sure after this, he is going to try harder than ever to make sure we don't get to vote. But I loved Historian Timothy Snyder's comment that Ron had. "Hungarians showing how to win big in an unfair election: organize AND protest AND vote AND demand profound change.” He's one of my favorites..This is very positive.coming from him,and telling us it can be done. so we shall see. I can tell you JD, Thiel, Musk, the tech bros...are.not happy tonight.

I need to read Snyder's article up on my email, trying to get there, Robin. No doubt some cause for concern we might not yet have heard the last of Orban, but we can dream can't we?

Yes SFGal. We take the wins when we can and that's a good day. It's such a roller coaster.ride. .Tomorrow will be some blockade and who knows what else that lunatic will do!

It's why I wait for Ron and went no email last.summer. I cannot possibly keep up with substack, news sites, alerts, and lives, and YT videos, but I find comfort in watching Timothy Snyder videos and try to watch him whenever he comes up on my YT feed. I even watched a Hitler documentary he was part of. He has done several videos with other Substack creators which I love. He is serious and sober when he needs to be, but he is also hopeful..and watching us from Canada. Like a guardian. Occasionally he'll post a short video on his Substack. . I don't want to overwhelm you, but I follow the "Raging Moderates" podcast on Youtube. It's with Jessica.Tarlov (from Fox's The Five, which I will never watch) , but she is fabulous. Dem. Brilliant..Bryn Mawr. I think two degrees and a PHD from London School of Economic and partners with Prof Scott Galloway (who also does Pivot with Kara Swisher). Scott's gone a lot so Jessica always has great guests and I try to catch her when I can. She had Timothy Snyder on a couple of months ago and she was fan girling, and I say it with the greatest respect...because he is so respected. He really listens to whoever he is speaking with, hears every word, no matter how long you talk, and then he responds thoughtfully. Jessica is funny too and I was delighted to see him laugh and smile. If you ever get a chance to look for that episode on Youtube. Good luck.trying to dig through the emails!

I just can't sit through podcasts, but do get Snyder's newsletters and see him often on MSNOW like yesterday on Velshi and often with Laurence O'Donnell. I'd first read "Tyranny" soon after the golden escalator. Wow! Didn't know about Tarlov, but what a stunning education! I'm pretty busy daily with Marc Elias updates and Dekleptocracy "American Princelings." I also read the Lincoln Project, Lincoln Square, Democracy Forward, and ProPublica, plus Garrett Graff and The Editorial Board. Really too much but do my best to keep up and read HCR at night on Bluesky. I enjoy Scott Galloway in his MS interviews and Gil Duran of Nerd Reich.

You are.following great.people. I enjoy Nerd.Reich too...got him from Oaktown!.I learned on some.of.these.substacks.to use the audio. I.hate the AI voices, but I just can't read everything. I lam desperately trying to.read a book! Haven't seen Heather in a while..When I have 15 minutes I listen to her audio. Such a smooth,.comforting voice.too..
