Here is what I was told. Asians try to stay out of the sun as a tan would indicate that the family worked in the fields. Therefore, they try not to tan so they don't look poor. I know this sounds bad but I was told this while I was visiting Beijing several years ago. If this is not true, this is what I was told. I would love to know if it is indeed true. I do know that while I was there, most of the women I saw were under umbrellas to block the sun as they were going about their business.
