By Ben Meiselas
What we just witnessed in the Oval Office was one of the most unhinged press conferences in presidential history—and that’s saying a lot when you’re dealing with Donald Trump.
The stated reason for the event was to announce that the 2026 NFL Draft would be held in Washington, D.C. Sounds straightforward, right? But of course, with Trump, nothing ever is. He stumbled through the announcement with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser awkwardly flanking him like hostages in a reality show gone off the rails.
Then came the bizarre tangent about reopening Alcatraz—yes, the island prison that’s now a national park. When asked how he came up with the idea, Trump veered off into a word salad about wanting to be a filmmaker. Some are speculating that Trump likely watched Escape from Alcatraz on public access TV over the weekend, which did air in the Palm Beach area. I wish I were joking. You’ve got to see the clip to believe how far gone he sounds.
And just when you think it couldn’t get any more disconnected from reality, Trump was asked about the AI-generated image of himself as the Pope that he posted—on his own official account AND the White House account—while the Catholic community is still mourning Pope Francis. His response? Deny, deflect, then blame the “fake news media.” Not a shred of accountability, not even an ounce of empathy.
Then came his jab at Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who’s visiting the White House. Trump said he didn’t know why Carney was coming, implied he was there to “kiss ass,” and doubled down on his insane plan to annex Canada to make the U.S. the largest country by landmass, as if he’s buying up golf courses, not dealing with sovereign nations.
Oh, and did I mention Trump wants to pay undocumented immigrants $1,000 to “self-deport” on “beautiful flights” out of the country? That’s right. MAGA’s new “solution” to immigration isn’t having Mexico pay for a wall, it’s having you pay people to leave—on top of the fact that Trump actually deported fewer people than President Biden, despite the endless bluster.
He capped it off by whining that immigrants shouldn’t be entitled to trials. He openly said 5 million trials are “too many” and seemed to suggest that due process itself is the problem. This is the same guy who says he’s all about law and order, while literally arguing against the rule of law.
As I watched it unfold, I couldn’t help but think: this is not normal. This is not leadership. This is not someone fit for the office he currently occupies.
