I am a Nurse Practitioner an hold a doctor of nursing practice. And the comment about physicians is correct. Physicians spend time on the units and then they leave once they have seen patients. It IS the nurse who is with the patient around the clock making the critical assessments of patients.

CRNAs are 80% of the anesthesia providers in rural counties. In some counties, they are 100% of the providers. A DNP program that leads to certification as a Registered Nurse Anesthetist takes approximately 3 years to complete. And the programs are very expensive. I greatly appreciate the support of nurses but nurses are not trained. We are educated just like every other profession. Using the word trained to refer to us perpetuates the misconception that we are not a profession. I ask that nurses be referred to as the educated professionals that we are. I am a Nurse Practitioner an hold a doctor of nursing practice. And the comment about physicians is correct. Physicians spend time on the units and then they leave once they have seen patients. It IS the nurse who is with the patient around the clock making the critical assessments of patients.
Having spent a month in ICU as a patient, I wouldn't be here without “my” nurses.
