I am so sad for the rural Deep South, so impoverished and struggling. They would benefit so much from having Democrats in office. And the Black people there (who often still have Jim Crow-type obstacles to voting, as we do here in all of Ohio) didn't ask for this.

I stocked up a little, but couldn't survive that long, but there are a lot of things that I can do without. Just a change of lifestyle, only buying from local dealers that are not tRumpers what I need and supporting our local farm products.
I did that in 2004 when Bush was reelected. I was so convinced he would trash the economy. He did; it just took longer than I expected. So I'm well-versed in this. Food, cat supplies, household and personal basics, and garden stuff. The rest is unnecessary.
I’m doing the same thing. I only shop for what I need. One tip is to cook simple meals. It took me about a month to break the habit of shopping shopping shopping. I’m saving money and losing weight!
I'm set for a year or 2. Only purchasing fuel to get to Dr. Appts. Finally got my 8 person storm shelter set up as a secondary living space for me, my fur baby and bird, should the need arise. Geothermal was the way to go.

My hope is that the next mass protests will emphasize the need to either withhold our federal taxes or be ready to go on a general strike to bring these corporations to their knees. When I was writing for an environmental website back in 2014-2015, I watched Whitehouse's monthly "Time to Wake Up" presentations he did for years on climate change. He would take to the floor of the Senate with charts and photos and talk about another aspect of the environment. Sometimes the chamber would be empty, but he was always there.

One of our shortcomings is that we get sucked in too easily by politicians who showboat and self-promote a lot to the point where we say "they're the one ones ..." and ignore a ton of great Democrats who are doing the heavy lifting but often just quietly working in the background and being incredibly effective (Lauren Underwood leaps to mind). I love Crockett because she's nailing both sides. When the Democrats take back the House in 2026 and she becomes chair of the Oversight Committee (hopefully), Donnie is going to need to increase his diaper budget.

Which "dead guy" and which specific slot are you talking about? There's no spot known as "ranking leader." Katherine Clark and Pete Aguilar, neither of them dead, are the second and third in command, and both are terrific. Jeffries is also moving young people, such as Neguse, into leadership roles, but it takes a little time. Crockett is new; Neguse was part of the same class as AOC but he's a lot more effective and accomplished.
I know their records, especially Gillibrand whom I've supported for years and was my first choice for presidential candidate in 2016. I follow Progressive Punch constantly which tells you their actual voting record. Gillibrand has never been out of the top 10 most progressive senators. Bernie Sanders has never been in it. (He's currently #14, higher than usual — he's been out of the top 20). Warren is currently #1. There are a lot of great progressives just doing the work, but not constantly pushing their faces everywhere, such as the #2 most progressive senator whose name I'll bet many here wouldn't recognize. It's Mazie Hirono of Hawaii. You might want to check their records.

I think a general strike would be great; let them know how much they still need the people, not just the bully billionaires. I actually do that now. I don’t spend at most stores, especially corporate stores. I have cut off as many unnecessary subscriptions (except substack) that I can. I watch PBS and occasionally local networks and unsubscribed from others who are gouging us anyway. Get them in the pocket to get them to listen to us. I can't for some things like my glasses and prescriptions. Our insurance was allowing us to use the local pharmacy, owned by the mayor's wife. Last January that changed and it went to only CVS. Small pharmacies declined UHC contract. My glasses can only go through Lenscrafters. Everything else is fair game!

I’ve been trained and have worked in this field for several decades and could offer a few ideas on developing a community analysis, as well as a process for a community vision that includes goals & the measuring of success. Several state economic developments have these services but they also are in bed with the very people who have exploited the working class. Big Banks, the Insurance Industry, Big Box Stores, and Corporate entities which control so many franchises are examples of what we are up against. The Public Banking model that began in North Dakota in the early nineteen hundreds is an excellent way to keep local money recirculating through the community rather than it all going directly to Wall Street. I love the concept of only buying what we need. Many of us do that because our financial situation doesn't leave much room for buying anything else, but even we might be able to find things we don't really need to buy. I get amazed at yard sales and how much stuff folks have to sell. I have never had anything to even donate to a yard sale, but again part of that is because of my income. I've been reading a book called The Service Berry and it's about the gifting economy and while that may not be possible on a large scale, I think there is a lot we can do to get closer to that type of economy. I live in a rural area and if you know where to look at the right time of year you can find plenty of blackberries to pick and as the author of this book states, this is such a pure gift from the land...we did not plant the bushes, we did not water them, we haven't earned or labored or paid for them, they are just there (well there might be some labor involved as anyone who has picked wild blackberries knows!). Part of the gifting economy is, as you say, don't get things you don't need. And share what ever abundance you have. I live in a 99.9% maga area and have no interaction with my neighbors, but I think it would be neat if there were tons of swap meets all over the natin where they really were swap meets...people bring things they no longer need and swap with other folks, or just give the stuff away if there isn't anything there you need. Sort of a much bigger free "library" program where folks leave books they don't want in a little library for others to take as they want to. Ms. Kimmerer the author of the Serviceberry says "In a gift economy the currency in circulation is gratitude and connection rather than goods of money". Maybe by focusing on not buying things we don't need we can focus more on a currency of gratitude and connection.
That’s a community building plan that can work. I started a free table at the end of our driveway and put things on the table that my wife and I were no longer using. Over the 46 years we’ve been married we have many usable things that we no longer need.

One of the saddest things I saw yesterday when I had to drive near the Pentagon was seeing the military personnel walking to their staging places. How awful for them to have to be forced to be in hot, muggy weather all day to be pawns for a guy that doesn’t respect them at all.
It’s one of the most important numbers to him, it’s affirmation to his worth. Polling numbers, his wealth, opinion polls, crowd sizes, viewers on tv, his height/weight.

Late last night my local tv station, NBC Washington DC, reported that the protests were against trump’s parade. I tweeted that was a lie, the protests were for No Kings Day.
This morning they did say protests around the country were about “no kings” but the one in Washington DC was against the parade. They also said there were hundreds of thousands of people at the parade. LIE, estimated 8,000 attendees were there. Not more than 100,000.
There wasn't one in D.C., a deliberate choice by the organizers of the nO Kings protests. They were telling people in D.C. to find an event in Virginia or Maryland.
How can the military staff accept a military salute from a draft dodger who does not care about veterans and the brave men and women serving their country. He only loves the pomp and hopes that some of the militarys’ strength reflects on his unbecoming figure…quite pathetic, really 😂!
It's considered unseemly and inappropriate for civilians to offer or return military salutes. This is true even of the President, who although "Commander in Chief" is nonetheless a civilian. It would be doubly true of a draft-dodging civilian who, as president, has repeatedly spoken and behaved with disrespect.
This practice got going with Ronald Reagan and we've seen it off and on ever since. It should be deprecated because it violates longstanding military tradition.

I attended the rally in Buffalo with approximately 10,000 like-minded people. It was awesome. We did have a few incidents where MAGA actually punched a couple of people, and a young man in a car had an extremely loud engine. A peackeeper took a video of him. The MAGA supporter yanked on the young person who was playing his trombone. The police quickly apprehended him, handcuffed him, and impounded his car. I'm pretty sure the police apprehended the man who punched people, but I didn't see it. I just encouraged the person I saw to report him to the peacekeepers and the police. So MAGA will try to provoke us, and we need to be aware. The Buffalo police did an awesome job of protecting the protestors.
The Cleveland police said there was one arrest of being "disorderly," less than the average beer fest. I didn't see any counterprotestors. It wasn't a friendly environment for them with the huge annual Juneteenth Freedom Fest going on a block away. I'm sure our local people said "hundreds" of people protested, but there were thousands, probably not as many as Pride last week, but still a massive crowd (It was the biggest Pride here ever.) Also there were about a dozen smaller No Kings events in nearby suburbs, and some were pretty large, despite rain, including in Parma, a large blue-collar suburb that used to be solidly Democratic but has leaned Trump in recent years. It was once notorious for its whiteness and racism, but friends who went to their No Kings event said it was huge too.
I was very proud to show up with 4 generations to protest together! My 3 yr.old great grand held her own sign! That's who we elders are doing this for!!!!

That's what I'm doing I made all my purchases over the last 2 years. I in theory can survive buying nothing but essentials for a decade
I stocked up a little, but couldn't survive that long, but there are a lot of things that I can do without. Just a change of lifestyle, only buying from local dealers that are not tRumpers what I need and supporting our local farm products.
I did that in 2004 when Bush was reelected. I was so convinced he would trash the economy. He did; it just took longer than I expected. So I'm well-versed in this. Food, cat supplies, household and personal basics, and garden stuff. The rest is unnecessary.
I’m doing the same thing. I only shop for what I need. One tip is to cook simple meals. It took me about a month to break the habit of shopping shopping shopping. I’m saving money and losing weight!

When I was writing for an environmental website back in 2014-2015, I watched Whitehouse's monthly "Time to Wake Up" presentations he did for years on climate change. He would take to the floor of the Senate with charts and photos and talk about another aspect of the environment. Sometimes the chamber would be empty, but he was always there.

One of our shortcomings is that we get sucked in too easily by politicians who showboat and self-promote a lot to the point where we say "they're the one ones ..." and ignore a ton of great Democrats who are doing the heavy lifting but often just quietly working in the background and being incredibly effective (Lauren Underwood leaps to mind). I love Crockett because she's nailing both sides. When the Democrats take back the House in 2026 and she becomes chair of the Oversight Committee (hopefully), Donnie is going to need to increase his diaper budget.

Which "dead guy" and which specific slot are you talking about? There's no spot known as "ranking leader." Katherine Clark and Pete Aguilar, neither of them dead, are the second and third in command, and both are terrific. Jeffries is also moving young people, such as Neguse, into leadership roles, but it takes a little time. Crockett is new; Neguse was part of the same class as AOC but he's a lot more effective and accomplished.
Gerry Connolly died in May. Jeffries picked him over AOC.
Personally, I would reaccess Kristen Gillibrand and Jared Mokowitz as NOT being steadfast supporters. Might want to check their records 🤔
I know their records, especially Gillibrand whom I've supported for years and was my first choice for presidential candidate in 2016. I follow Progressive Punch constantly which tells you their actual voting record. Gillibrand has never been out of the top 10 most progressive senators. Bernie Sanders has never been in it. (He's currently #14, higher than usual — he's been out of the top 20). Warren is currently #1. There are a lot of great progressives just doing the work, but not constantly pushing their faces everywhere, such as the #2 most progressive senator whose name I'll bet many here wouldn't recognize. It's Mazie Hirono of Hawaii. You might want to check their records.
(I know there was a smear campaign against Gillibrand by supporters of Al Franken, but everything they claimed was a misogynist lie. She's one of the most reliable progressives in the Democratic Party and she had nothing to do with his resignation — that was all on Chuck Schumer.)

I think a general strike would be great; let them know how much they still need the people, not just the bully billionaires. I actually do that now. I don’t spend at most stores, especially corporate stores. I have cut off as many unnecessary subscriptions (except substack) that I can. I watch PBS and occasionally local networks and unsubscribed from others who are gouging us anyway. Get them in the pocket to get them to listen to us. If enough corporations stood up to Trump, he would have no leverage. Bending the knee to this pathetic little dictator is cowardly, anti-American and simply ethically and morally wrong.

I can't for some things like my glasses and prescriptions. Our insurance was allowing us to use the local pharmacy, owned by the mayor's wife. Last January that changed and it went to only CVS. Small pharmacies declined UHC contract. My glasses can only go through Lenscrafters. Everything else is fair game!
Definitely shop the Mom and Pop stores, but Catherine mentioned a new fan and faucet - even if you use a local contractor they still have to get those things from the cheapest place to make a profit - that means China.

Off topic? Maybe, but what I saw of a hearing with Noem and Rand Paul was infuriating. We, the American taxpayers, are paying for security for sports events, like FIFA and the NFL. WTF! They make billions, and we pay for their security? So much for the Republicans implying that ordinary citizens in need of access to healthcare are moochers!
I love the concept of only buying what we need. Many of us do that because our financial situation doesn't leave much room for buying anything else, but even we might be able to find things we don't really need to buy. I get amazed at yard sales and how much stuff folks have to sell. I have never had anything to even donate to a yard sale, but again part of that is because of my income. I've been reading a book called The Service Berry and it's about the gifting economy and while that may not be possible on a large scale, I think there is a lot we can do to get closer to that type of economy. I live in a rural area and if you know where to look at the right time of year you can find plenty of blackberries to pick and as the author of this book states, this is such a pure gift from the land...we did not plant the bushes, we did not water them, we haven't earned or labored or paid for them, they are just there (well there might be some labor involved as anyone who has picked wild blackberries knows!). Part of the gifting economy is, as you say, don't get things you don't need. And share what ever abundance you have. I live in a 99.9% maga area and have no interaction with my neighbors, but I think it would be neat if there were tons of swap meets all over the natin where they really were swap meets...people bring things they no longer need and swap with other folks, or just give the stuff away if there isn't anything there you need. Sort of a much bigger free "library" program where folks leave books they don't want in a little library for others to take as they want to. Ms. Kimmerer the author of the Serviceberry says "In a gift economy the currency in circulation is gratitude and connection rather than goods of money". Maybe by focusing on not buying things we don't need we can focus more on a currency of gratitude and connection.
That’s a community building plan that can work. I started a free table at the end of our driveway and put things on the table that my wife and I were no longer using. Over the 46 years we’ve been married we have many usable things that we no longer need.

One of the saddest things I saw yesterday when I had to drive near the Pentagon was seeing the military personnel walking to their staging places. How awful for them to have to be forced to be in hot, muggy weather all day to be pawns for a guy that doesn’t respect them at all.

Late last night my local tv station, NBC Washington DC, reported that the protests were against trump’s parade. I tweeted that was a lie, the protests were for No Kings Day.

This morning they did say protests around the country were about “no kings” but the one in Washington DC was against the parade. They also said there were hundreds of thousands of people at the parade. LIE, estimated 8,000 attendees were there. Not more than 100,000.
There wasn't one in D.C., a deliberate choice by the organizers of the nO Kings protests. They were telling people in D.C. to find an event in Virginia or Maryland.

It's considered unseemly and inappropriate for civilians to offer or return military salutes. This is true even of the President, who although "Commander in Chief" is nonetheless a civilian. It would be doubly true of a draft-dodging civilian who, as president, has repeatedly spoken and behaved with disrespect.
This practice got going with Ronald Reagan and we've seen it off and on ever since. It should be deprecated because it violates longstanding military tradition.

I attended the rally in Buffalo with approximately 10,000 like-minded people. It was awesome. We did have a few incidents where MAGA actually punched a couple of people, and a young man in a car had an extremely loud engine. A peackeeper took a video of him. The MAGA supporter yanked on the young person who was playing his trombone. The police quickly apprehended him, handcuffed him, and impounded his car. I'm pretty sure the police apprehended the man who punched people, but I didn't see it. I just encouraged the person I saw to report him to the peacekeepers and the police. So MAGA will try to provoke us, and we need to be aware. The Buffalo police did an awesome job of protecting the protestors.
Love to hear how those incidents were dealt with peacefully. So proud of all of you who were out there spreading hope and joy yesterday! 🇨🇦
The Cleveland police said there was one arrest of being "disorderly," less than the average beer fest. I didn't see any counterprotestors. It wasn't a friendly environment for them with the huge annual Juneteenth Freedom Fest going on a block away. I'm sure our local people said "hundreds" of people protested, but there were thousands, probably not as many as Pride last week, but still a massive crowd (It was the biggest Pride here ever.) Also there were about a dozen smaller No Kings events in nearby suburbs, and some were pretty large, despite rain, including in Parma, a large blue-collar suburb that used to be solidly Democratic but has leaned Trump in recent years. It was once notorious for its whiteness and racism, but friends who went to their No Kings event said it was huge too.
