First of all it would take an act of congress to do anything with Social Security. Social Security is its own entity not part of the government. There is absolutely to way this will get passed them. If they did they will all will be hung out to dry and their careers would be but dust in the wind. Relax my dear.

What Republicans/MAGA plan to do is put the Social Security funds into the stock market. That way hedge funds will have trillions of dollars to gamble with. The hedge fund oligarchs will be rewarded nicely. Once the oligarchs crash the economy like they did in 2008, they can buy low and move the shares to their bank accounts like they did in 2008 and also get a bail out from the federal government like in 2008. Then when the Democrats, ten years later, repair the economy the oligarchs shares are now worth trillions again. Social Security recipients will just have to eat the losses. There will be no bail out for social security receipients, they will have their social security checks cut to the bone and have to make due for 10 years waiting for the economy to be repaired.
That's my read, too. I think you're optimistic to think that the Democratic Party is ever going to see power again. Sham elections and oligarchs will prevent it. It may take a Civil War to break their hold. This is like the last few turns of a Monopoly game.
And just how are they going to go about privatizing it and if it’s not gonna be the stock market which is a bad idea because we are the ones we’re going to pay the price
I keep hearing about Congress taking money out of the Social Security trust fund to pay for other things. Does that take an act of Congress, too? That is a serious question because I don't know. They wouldn't have to end it if they just drained the trust fund down to zero.
I do believe there is no way they can take money out of Social Security. Every American who’s held a job pays into social security. Social security is its “own” entity, separate from the US government. If they took the money to spend elsewhere this would constitute stealing.
I’m not a lawyer or affiliated with anything to do with this subject. I have been advised to be careful and not get sucked into all the drama. It’ll take you down the rabbit hole. Common sense is the route to take. I do know it would take an act of congress before any money would be removed. No congressmen in their right mind (right or left) would do such a thing. Common sense tells you this.
Thank you for the answer. I found on the web an explanation that says the fund was set up so that it cannot be used for anything else but excess funds each year are invested in government bonds which are used to pay for things that Congress approves so that may be where the misconception about Congress taking money out of the fund comes from. The thing that worries me, though, is that the trustees are four cabinet members and two public trustees. The public trustee positions have been vacant since 2015 so Trump will be appointing the four cabinet members and also possibly the two public trustees. Somehow, the notion of Trump appointing the trustees of my retirement funds does not give me a lot of confidence.
But thump wants the ability to choose NOT to spend monies that congress allocate. And NOT spending money may well be something this govt of otherwise DISorganized rightists might just be able to get together to do.
When George W Bush was in office he tried to privatize SS and it went over like a fart in church. It's the third rail of politics. My mother was alive at that time and she railed about how Republicans call SS and Medicare "entitlements" when they are earned benefits.
Yes, Matalena, but common sense is the one thing that is sorely missing in much of Congress. Like the corrupt section of the Supreme Court, the MAGA-compromised senators and representatives would probably sit on their hands and abstain from any vote against a motion that would keep Social Security intact. So much for an act of Congress. I very much wish I could trust the incoming government to work for the common good.
Congress has "borrowed" from the social security fund in the past. They should skip their raises and replace what they have stolen.
It seems as though this criminal organization will do whatever they want, and since they have control over MSM we won't even know about it until it's to late. Lucky, we have the Meidas resistance for now.
The Congress has taken money out of the Social Security Trust several times. The first time that I can remember was during the Vietnam War, but they have raided it several other times since. They have never made any attempt to restore the funds after raiding the proverbial cookie jar. That is just not right.
Also around the turn of the century the Republicans tried to privatize the Trust, but fortunately failed in that attempt. This is an example of the Republicans long term strategy much like the abortion ban. Having always been the smaller political party they want to disrupt the status quo of the Democrats and then lie and blame the Democrats for the economic woes. They work steadily on the long game.
I think one of their strategies will be divide and conquer; grandfather in those of us already on it, raise the retirement age for everyone else, and start plundering the funds. Those of us fortunate to keep it need to stand in solidarity with those coming along behind us - our children and grandchildren and 7 generations ahead.
Unfortunately, there are too many rethugs in congress and the senate who are eager to gut social security. If there’s a way, they’ll find it. Their first attempt will probably be trying to privatize it.
We have seen in the last day or so now Congress bends to the will of the Trump/Musk co-presidency. If the Duumvirate directs them to radically change Social Security or ANY government program, watch Congress scramble to git’er done.
I'm hoping this comes back to bite the Republicans, I don't think they can dismantle S.S they way there planing to. They'll have a astronomical fight on there hands.
Thank you! Sometimes I have to just do some deep breathing and you know... chill. It's just that I'm 73 and I'm on disability and have them for 10 years but I'm older these are my golden years. But it's been 10 years of that asshole Trump! Depressing as hell.

Well I'll be fucking homeless. Along with many many people in my generation. The baby boomers!
They want to privatize it.
First Musk knows absolutely nothing about governance nor does his side kick. They do NOT have the POWER to privatize social security.
They’ve talked about that for years and nothing gets done. Let’s hope they don’t get organized.
And just how are they going to go about privatizing it and if it’s not gonna be the stock market which is a bad idea because we are the ones we’re going to pay the price
So you’ve got faith in the integrity of a MAGA (albeit slim) House majority and SCOTUS? 🤭

If they removed any funds to do with what they want they cannot legally do this.
He will pardon his criminal accomplices.
