GN: Leader of the Democratic Party. Finally someone has emerged from the haze.

Stop imagining that an opposition party would need ONE specific leader, or politicians who do things that come with very high visibility.

What Newsom is doing here is fantastic, but what Schumer and Jeffries do may be less spectacular, it's not less important when it comes to defeating fascism!

In a democracy, we need everyone and all strategies combined.

Nope. As long as that's how you imagine democracy functions, you'll be part of the problem, not the solution.

And Schumer's refusal to cave to Trump and block the government has single-handedly slowed down the installation of fascism tremendously. Inform yourself and ask yourself what YOU can do for your country, rather than cynically criticizing the only ones fighting back like hell without even taking a look at what they're doing in the first place!

This is a copy-paste of a reply to someone else:

Since you need an actively engaged society interested in knowing the answer to this question, day by day, and that society has mostly disappeared, in the US, corporate media refuse to report on it. So we have to actively look for the info ourselves.

You can find it by watching/reading MTN, Letters from America (Heather Cox Richardson), Paul Krugman etc.

Some examples: one of the key things an opposition party can do (and is doing) to slow down the installation of neofascism is to NOT shut down the government. Making sure that all Democrats Reps and Senators understood why that was vital is what Schumer worked on. The good news? He succeeded!

Another crucial activity is holding hearings, so that cabinet members have to explain to the American people what they're doing and why. In this way, everyone who decides to watch can see, in detail, how immoral this cabinet is. Once we have this info, we can show it to Trump voters. That is OUR job, in a democracy. No politician can do this in our place.

Then there is the fact that they can work hard to not vote for any GOP bill that is neofascist, which requires a LOT of work and coordination among Democrats in DC.

They can go to town halls in their home states/districts, or to red ones, to make sure that constituents are informed and have all they need to fight back.

And they can come up with alternative bills, so that as soon as "we the people" give them Congress and the White House back, we don't waste time and can immediately roll back all the damage the neofascist GOP is doing right now.

All of this is absolutely VITAL.

I agree with all of what you are saying. I still do not see Schumer engaging though. I wish I did. I see him as feckless. I want him replaced by someone strong. That is my opinion and maybe I am wrong. I’m a 61 year old white woman and feel we need new younger thinkers. I have nothing against Schumer and hope that he is doing things behind the scenes I know nothing about. I don’t think we need flashy but we need strong voices and people who can pull us together. Just my opinion. In the interim I stand with the Democrats and do my part. Protesting, boycotting, calling reps, and staying informed. Thank you again for getting back to me. I truly appreciate your time and information very much.

Expand full comment
EUWDTB's avatar

Yes, I do believe that that idea is wrong.

You need tremendous experience, wisdom and strength to convince enough Democratic Senators to vote AGAINST a government shutdown when most of the base is kicking and screaming and sees shutting down the government as a very satisfying SYMBOLIC action of protest against the disgustingly fascist GOP, without taking its consequences or the history of defeating fascism into account at all.

A Senate Leader needs to be able to have all the knowledge, experience, and level-headedness required to make the WISEST decision, especially when the base doesn't understand yet why that's the case.

Defeating fascism is not easy. It's not a matter of having some charismatic TV celebrities that look good and convincing on camera, offering "fresh ideas". It's a matter of having the determination and patience to dig deep and do all the 24/7, boring work needed to restore democracy.

And to know what Schumer is doing when TV cameras only want to focus on controversy rather than educating the American people at a time when it truly matters, just watch MTN, or C-Span. Or make sure that you subscribe to Schumer and Jeffries' social media accounts. It's all there, for anyone to see. We just need to decide to look and remember why doing this is absolutely crucial.

In the meantime: yes, protesting, boycotting, calling reps, and having debates among ourselves is definitely vital too.

Thank you so much for doing so, and for sharing your thoughts. Together, we WILL defeat them!!

Expand full comment
EUWDTB's avatar

With legacy media systematically refusing to report on what Democrats are doing (apparently, reporting on who does what in Congress it too boring so reduces their profits, compared to posting one clickbait headline after the other - screw democracy in the process) and limiting all coverage to cynical horse race articles only, it's not that easy to know what they're doing indeed.

Also, cynicism isn't a character trait, it's an understandable reaction, based on not knowing key facts.

And yes, we absolutely need to be a team! So thanks for your question.

I already replied to it in replies to other people above, so I'll copy-paste some of them here in a few minutes.

Yes, there are members who are asking important questions, but without a majority they are landing on deaf ears. And I don't see Schumer or Jeffries doing ANYTHING. Jeffries in particular is a disappointment. He'll criticize Trump by saying what Trump is saying is simply jot true instead of saying what needs to be said: TRUMP IS A LIAR. Trump and MAGATS play dirty. You wanna have an effect, get down into the dirt and fight dirty as well. The Obama mantra of "we aim high when they aim low DOES NOT WORK.

Expand full comment
EUWDTB's avatar

Look deeper.

Schumer single-handedly blocked the government shutdown that Trump and Musk absolutely wanted, which allowed SO many Democrats to file an unprecedented number of lawsuits against Trump, and they're winning most of them.

If you study the history of fascism, you'll see that things like these are VITAL to resist and slow down its installation.

And no, democracy is not an end goal, it's a means, it is the way you fight. As history has proven. Too many on the left today seem to want a dictatorship too. That will never ever work.

Expand full comment
Stewart Gooderman O.D.'s avatar

I strongly disagree with you. I WANTED the shut down. I would suggest you look even deeper. Every time we had a shutdown, guess who was blamed: REPUBLICANS. And the only way people rally to your side is when they are hurt directly. And Democrats aren’t winning most of them. Just look at yesterday’s Supreme Court rulings. They are losing all the big important ones.

Expand full comment
EUWDTB's avatar

That's not looking deeper, it's ignoring the fact that today, the GOP is INSTALLING FASCISM. So we're in a situation that is totally incomparable with previous shutdowns.

You need to look at the concrete consequences of a shutdown DURING the installation, and not in terms of poll numbers (who will be blamed for it) but in terms of the longterm impact on the possibility to ever restore democracy.

Study what just happened in Poland, to have a concrete example.

In Poland, a neofascist party installed fascism for 8 years. In general, history shows, you need about a decade to transition fully from democracy to fascism. So the process was almost complete.

Then, people voted for a pro-democracy coalition again. What happened next? Most judges are still pro-fascism, and the leader of the executive is still a fascist so... most bills passed by a democratic Congress are blocked. So much so that people start to get impatient again, and with the media still largely controlled by fascist propaganda, a small majority is now blaming Democrats for not making their lives better fast enough so... they just voted for a fascist as head of state AGAIN, which of course will only make things worse.

Preventing THIS from happening should be our first priority. And it's exactly why we couldn't possibly afford a government shutdown. Under a government shutdown, everything that fascists WANT to do in terms of destruction of government institutions would have become 100% legal. So it might as well have taken DECADES to recover from that, IF Schumer would have given them what they wanted.

By refusing to cave, he allowed Democrats and everyone else to strongly slow down the destruction process, which is VITAL to make sure that democracy can be restored asap.

It may take a while before the American people (notoriously ill-informed and cynical by now, on both sides of the political spectrum) get this, which is why it was SUCH a courageous decision. It also proves that Schumer has the wisdom needed to NOT put his personal career before the wellbeing of the entire country. And that is EXACTLY the type of leadership we absolutely need right now.

After watching the entire debacle in LA, one would think he had plenty of ammunition for his claim. However, the breakdown of what’s right and wrong within the judicial system is so skewed, wrong seems to be the growing outcome.

What happened in LA is happening everywhere. The credentials of the alleged ICE officers come into question. A woman that was pregnant asked for help that never addressed her concerns. She carried a dead baby inside her for three days. One woman with two children was arrested as she came out of the courtroom. One of the agents made gesture that exposed his fire arm to the little boy that terrified the child even more.

FOX didn’t really “learn” anything from the Dominion law suit. They paid Dominion the money, but they didn’t have to admit any wrong doing, apologize, retract their lies; any of that. That being said, in a defamation case, the Court just might set a higher dollar limit if FOX is found liable, again. As with E. Jean Carroll, didn’t the Court consider “What’s it going to take to make whomever is responsible to stop?”

I am not or have ever been a lawyer, and none of the information above should be construed as legal advice.

They learned a lot. I am a lawyer for 46 years and you can tell what FOX learned from having to pay almost a billion in damages. Courts don't set damage limits. Juries do anf FOX was terrified of that Dominion jury. If no jury, the Court will determine damages based on the evidence and the law. Neither the jury nor the court set the damages paid in the Dominion settlement - the parties did - after their lawyers determined the damages exposure to FOX based on the evidence.
