Ben, although I had hoped for a Liberal Majority (which may still happen as of 2:10am Eastern time) I have to let you know that Prime Minister Carney could easily work with the BQ leader to work a house Majority. Atm, the Liberals only need 6 seats so it's definitely not as difficult as you may think. Also, PP LOST his seat! 🤣 Now he's going to have to carpetbag some poor soul who actually won their Conservative riding! The jokes write themselves. THANK YOU my fellow 🇨🇦 brothers and sisters ❤️ 🇨🇦🍁🇨🇦

Best turnout since 2015 but still not good enough. 67% of eligible voters is still a disgrace! 1 in 3 voters NOT voting is what allows a Majority government to form with less than 50% of the vote. We need a change that would cause a runoff if no candidate in the riding gets 50% +1 vote

To be fair, many older Australians were raised to learn Britain's history and learned about Captains Cook. They learned about bushranger and foreign explorers, and didn't learn much about First Nations peoples history. In addition, Australia supported countries during wars, both Caucasian and First Nation people. The only time it slowed a little was in the early 1980's (?). Mental health was not considered a serious thing until Veterans from the Vietnam War started a social movement to help Veterans.

Younger Peacekeeoers also integrated into the movement to help modern veterans. Yet family mental health and the effects of the white Australia policy still dont receive much attention. Though many people suffered but are undiagnosed. The effects of intergenerational trauma has gone unnoticed (probably too frightenly expensive to address), but so important. Add to that trauma for refugees entering Australia that often is overlooked. Australia is a hot bed to be exploited by leaders with hidden agendas. It really is strange, the lack of engagement. But then again, kids want something that shocks and awes, they don't want to hear about the tedious, quiet work that's done behind the scenes. But that's what we get when consecutive generations are raised on social media. They think performances happen on their own. They only see the actors upon the stage and not the stagehands who are just behind the curtain, out of the spotlight, either on stage left or stage right, doing things like setting up the costume changes or getting the props ready or being ready to move when the actors need them to.

Expand full comment
Vel Santic's avatar

Have noticed it and been saying since the 2010s on that the most of so-called "social media" were made by the big-tech-oligarchs in their quest to destroy the Liberal Democracies. In that worst attack on humankind since WW2 and cold war, the oligarchs and their zombies had come up with seductive ways to brainwash the inexperienced, unsuspecting, coddled youths and such people of any age for the evil thrills of neo-nihilistic-fascism-kakistocracy.

Why didn't Liberal Democracy timely understand that it had to have developed the self-defensive and counteroffensive mechanisms, is the part that is puzzling me.

I'm not sure if that's Temu Trump (Dutton, LNP coalition) or Trump's doppelganger (Clive Palmer's party, "Trump of Patriots"). Clive acquired a refinery in NQ in 2009 with the promise of jobs and wealth for the local community. 2016, refinery collapses and closed. Clive left creditors and council rates unpaid, employees without work or their entitlements. Clive blamed low nickel prices as the problem. Turns out he transferred tens of millions $ from the company for his own purposes, falsified alterations to the refinery's joint venture agreement, and didn't pay workers $66M entitlements until a court battle ensued years later. In 2016, Clive resisted recovery actions, similarly to Trump. Evade, avoid, obstruct, then after no option concede and pay less than the full amount.

Even if I'm mad at the Bloc for splitting the votes, I HOPE they'll be smart enough to support Carney and block PP from stalling everything Carney tries to do. Unfortunately, we realized tonight that we also have a stupid MAGA cult growing in Canada now. 😡😡

But MAGA Canada Style died with Carney's speech. And that splinter party that was trying to ooze out of Poilievre's extremism had no candidates elected. I heard Meidas say that this would make a lot of Americans wish they could have a do over. This Canadian/American can say, hand on heart, that the Canadian brand of government, even minority government, is way, way better than the American. This is what direct democracy looks like. Where tiny pockets of alternative voices still have the power to direct the way the government should operate. And parties come together because they know if they don't the electorate will wreak revenge on them in the next election.

I was disappointed when some of the panel on the CBC coverage was talking about another election within a year if there was a minority gov't. Unless things have changed since, oh, 2011, Canadians do NOT like have expensive elections just because some sore loser Opposition party brings down a minority gov't with a No Confidence vote. There have been a few examples of the Opposition party losing worse in that kind of election.

Exactly, Valerie!! Do NOT let the loser pierre poilievre & his rotten russian conserves have any harmful effect on Canada's Democracy!!

Apparently although Poilievre lost his seat--after 20 years!--he's intending to stay on as leader of the Conservatives. The overall party result does speak to the Liberals having the same need as the Democrats down here: they need to engage a new generation of voters who are less educated in civics, less aware of how governments do and don't operate and less loyal to party as opposed to personality. Carney gave an amazing speech last night but now he needs to put people to work making good on those promises. And that's where the Canadian gov't has to differ from the mess down here. There's no revenge that's going to operate in Canada. This is going to be pure brass tacks of building an economy that takes advantage of the rich natural resources that Canada has without raping the land. That involves ALL of the people, not just the Liberal voters but the Conservatives, the BQ, the NDP and, yes, the Green. Carney laid it all out and what a contrast from the dark and dire words of Trump and his billionaires and cretins.

Bingo, my friend!! I’ve been yesterday and today analyzing the Canadian Elections 2025 and am asking for a friend to clarify to me some things about the political setup in Canada in comparison to USA. As I can see, Canada does not have a Senate (?) /its equivalent or am I wrong? Canada has the House of Commons as the main Parliament institution, or am I wrong? The elections in Canada don’t have anything similar to the electoral college, or am I wrong? The administrative units upon which the elections are counted are the electoral districts i.e. ridings, but does Canada have something like Counties/Municipalities/Townships/Wards within its Provinces? Please, please, please, if you could explain to me concisely that because Canadian territorial space is even larger than the USA’s, so even though I’m 100% into geography, the electoral units in each Province is something I’m trying to elucidate for sure!

I’ve noticed a disturbing pattern in this election - many Ontario’s and British Columbia’s ridings were squeezed out of the Liberals by the conservatives. Why and how come that?

Thank you so much, Valerie!!!

Oh gosh, you’d be better off reading about how Canada’s gov’t is organized on Wikipedia. I grew up in Canada, in Quebec, lived in a few other provinces so my explanations would be influenced by what I experienced, not just plain history. And I haven’t lived in Canada for almost 20 years. I think the main things about Canada from my perspective is that we have various governments that influence our daily lives: municipal governments that we elect democratically, then the provincial and finally the federal. Because Canada’s population is much smaller than the US, even though geographically it’s bigger than the US, we can have a bigger say in how those governments function on the municipal and provincial levels. Federally though, Canadians often feel that the two big provinces, Quebec and Ontario have much more influence than the other provinces do. Because that’s where the majority of the population is. We do have a Senate but it is appointed by the Federal gov’t, difficult to explain the relationship there. We do NOT have an electoral college, hallelujah, because the leader of the Federal gov’t is simply the leader of the majority party in Parliament. He/she has to be elected in their own riding as well so they are responsible not only to the total Canadian population but also to the part of the country that elected them directly. I can only say look up the Canadian gov’t on Wikipedia and that will give you an idea of how the Canadian gov’t “works”. Also, when you say there is a “pattern” — one thing you might want to realize is that the title “Conservatives” and “Liberals” is more party naming than the kind of belief system that the American definitions for their parties, Democrats and Republicans, mean. My father mostly voted Liberal his entire adult life but in his thinking he was conservative on some issues and liberal on others. I voted Liberal in most elections when I lived in Canada and was left-of-center. In my first voting opportunity after becoming American I voted Democrat all the way down the ticket because I am anti-MAGA.

The reason why I said I noticed an ugly pattern in parts of Ontario and British Columbia is because I don’t want to see them stolen by the conservatives the way tRumputinists-magats stole, for example, Pennsylvania in USA!

Thank you so much, Valerie! I’ve been reading on Wikipedia and am still trying to learn how the election system works in Canada, in comparison to USA. If needed I’ll be rereading your reply and getting more informed from Wikipedia or Canadian sources. Edit: specifically what I meant was - when USA’s election results are presented, the States, Counties/Townships/Municipalities are presented first, then, the electoral districts. So I was asking - can there be a such a presentation of Canadian elections, of course, understanding Canada has Provinces - but what are the next levels of administrative divisions?

Again, thanks a lot!

Keep watching the US. Trump is on his way out. Hopefully he will live long enough for impeachment or prison. Trump has been a bad influence on us all. When the MAGA movement is extinguished, I hope our neighbors and allies will trust the US again. Fingers crossed.

I have a Canadian Facebook friend who has shared a lot about Prime Minister Carney and she shared a video of a speech he made. He will be a great Prime Minister. Now if we can just impeach trump and his entire administration of unqualified misfits, we can build back and hopefully all be allies once again.

The cherry on the top is that of this moment the leader of. the Conservative party, the Tim-bit T Rump, Pierre Poilievre is losing his riding election by about 2,500 votes with a large percentage of all polling stations reported... That, to me, speaking as a Canadian, would be the greater indication of what we, Canadians, think of politicians of the tRump ilk... toss em to the curb..
