You’re right. Trump has been talking about establishing a national sovereign wealth fund, something that generally a nation with a $36 trillion national debt (which is what ours is, last I checked), would not be thinking of establishing until they had gotten that debt WAAAY down. Now, there’s also been Mump (my word for the MuskTrump action duo) talk of funding this national sovereign wealth fund by using our nation’s gold stores to purchase cryptocurrency (a.k.a. vaporware, perhaps because an EMP, whether nuclear (my guess is Putin would be happy to do Trump that favor for some quid pro quo) or solar, knocking out our Internet, could “vaporize” the contents of peoples’ crypto wallets) —so I can’t help thinking somewhere betwixt the cup and the lip there could be some sort of slip which someone more knowledgeable than I should pick up the ball on these various factoids to hypothesize.

The numbers are actually worse than that....

77,926,891 Votes NOT for Trump - 50.2% of voters

77,303,568 votes for trump - 49.8% of voters

If it had been any closer, these ships would have collided.

Trump did not win the popular vote and over 6 million voters stayed home.

There is no mandate with a 0.4 (4/10ths of 1%) margin in the difference.

Blue Smurf, you’re a lot more knowledgeable than I am about voting and such, so can you please clarify something for me? Is it not the case that with an extremely close vote nationwide, it is the number of votes in the seven swing states that would be determinative —due to the electoral college — of the presidential election? Such that, if a person does not live in one of those seven swing states, and they live in a red state, their vote would make little if not NO difference to the outcome, in a close-fought election? TYIA, Marie

Expand full comment
Bluesmurf's avatar

I'd say that is propaganda to get you to stay home. AND, personally, I am not a firm believer in that thought process. I live in a blue state now (but it's come close to being purple) and I lived in a red state as a blue dot. I always voted, even if I was outnumbered. Why? Because I really do not know how many other blue dots are in that state or how many red dots might vote blue because of the issues or the candidates. And there are always Independents.

I would say "Never believe that your vote doesn't count!" Look what happened in Iowa recently. Iowa is a red state, but they voted for a Democrat. There are red states that have a Democrat Governor and a red legislature: Kentucky and North Carolina come to mind.

The media and the parties pick the "swing states" based on the number of registered voters in each state and the closeness in those numbers - but they have been surprised many times that registered voters by party does NOT necessarily determine the outcome of an election.

Vote anyway - and especially pay attention to your local and state measures and candidates. There are Democrats and left-leaning and Center independents in every state. There is no guarantee how any of them will vote and your 1 vote may be the one that decides the election on any given issue.

Yes, state and local elections are extremely important - I live in AZ where are state Senate and state House are controlled by Republicans because we are gerrymandered in some legislative districts and even then it is only by a few seats in the state house and a few seats in the state senate, but our governor, two senators, Attorney General, Secretary of State are all Democrats. We have the majority of three out of five on the Chandler unified school board even though they say they are nonpartisan that is where maga and mom‘s for liberty are trying to come after children.

Expand full comment
Bluesmurf's avatar

Absolutely. If "We the People..." are going to take back our Country from the MAGAs, then we have to get involved at the local level and take it back from the bottom up.

Get involved in your local area government. Local government is where it starts - school boards, water boards, recreation boards, library boards, local activist groups, city councils, groups who support what you support. The MAGAs got their feet in the door and moved up the chain to get into Congress and to take over their States. We must do the same to get it back and flood the zone in this way.

Here are some EMPOWERING things you can do! Do your research, get the facts, support trusted and truthful independent media who will report on what is happening and who can provide proof of their truth to you. Speak out and speak up. This has to start at the local level to work. Demanding is NOT complaining. We have Rights that are on the books. We want them honored and kept!

OK, this part of your reply is new information to me if I understand it correctly: << The media and the parties pick the "swing states" based on the number of registered voters in each state and the closeness in those numbers - but they have been surprised many times that registered voters by party does NOT necessarily determine the outcome of an election.>> So does this mean that ANY state can become a swing state such that (to take as an example, a so-called red state), if more people vote for the Democrat, than for the Republican candidate and therefore the Electoral College voters for that state must vote for the Democrat, that it has become a swing state at least for that election? My apologies if that is a stupid question, and thank you for your time.

Expand full comment
Bluesmurf's avatar

No question is a stupid question.... In my life time, the swing states have moved around in the US. During the 2000 election, Florida was a swing state, believe it or not. Why? Because they had just as many Democrats registered to vote as they did Republicans registered to vote + the left leaning independents and the right leaning independents. A Swing State becomes a swing state because the party affiliations of registered voters in that state is too close to "guess" how they are mostly going to vote.

A purple state is one where the numbers of registered voters make the "political pundits/analysts" unsure if the state will vote in the majority for the Democrat or the Republican.

Previous elections can make a state a swing state, but the analysts look at registered voters. In 2028, we could have different swing states than the 7 that we have had in the past few elections, but people would have to 1) move to other states, or 2) change their party affiliation on their voter registration, or 3) more people move to a state and register with both parties - it's all about registered voters.

Example: California has a large number of Democrats and a larger number of Republicans - but the Democrats so far outnumber the Republicans that the likelihood of it becoming a swing state in my lifetime is slim to none.

Maine, on the other hand, has been a "red state" for awhile, and I think it is a "mix" or purple state leaning Democrat - but could become a Swing state if enough of a change takes place. Georgia could become a swing state, and even Florida. It's all in the numbers of registered voters in each party, including independents, and other parties.

I hope this helps answer your question.

I heard 90 million people who could’ve voted didn’t vote. Is it 6 million actual registered voters didn’t vote and the 90 million refers to citizens in this country who aren’t register to vote but could have registered and voted?

Expand full comment
Bluesmurf's avatar

I did a bunch of research on this subject. There are approximately 161.42 million registered voters out of the 260+ million adults in this country.

155,230,459 - voted in 2024, the majority for Kamala Harris or a 3rd Party

77.9 million voted NOT for trump

77.2 million voted for trump

The spread is a mere 4/10ths of 1%.

6,189,541 registered voters stayed home.

We should spread these numbers everywhere to put a stop to this nonsense that there is a mandate and a landslide win. Not hardly and in NO Universe!!!
