You're correct, the GOP must be moved. To start with that it will help if people avoid the false dichotomy that everyone is left/right and has any allegiance to a political party.

I'm an independent who has always voted and kept up to speed on issues, but there are plenty like me who sit on their hands because for decades they don't think they've gotten much of use from the Dems either, as they went corporate. The great harm that is coming is waking those people up. Making this a shirts vs skins thing will not help with them. Thats why I appreciate MTN being pro-democracy and not feeding into the false dichotomy.

Jerry Weiss, Feathers of Hope, identified several Republicans who say they want to talk. Although the House members voted with MAGA Mike on the budget, many are upset, and some, like mine represent majority Dem districts and have complained about Trump policies.

I don't think they'll; have an epiphany and become Democrats, but they can be pressured to stop most of the Trump agenda.

My regret is my Rep and Senators are Dems, so I have no GOP to contact as a constituent at the federal level. I still contact them, because some Dems have stupidly caved.

But yes, with pressure and time, some members of the GOP will find their spine, just as I watched them do during Watergate. But I don't see we have a lot of time me to play with. I'm one of those older people out in the streets. We have to figure out how to get a broader base than that. I know better than to ask black folks to show up - they have good reasons. But the youth need encouragement to show. I'm not out there for the 401k I don't have. I'm out there to preserve democracy. People my age remember that it can be normal and useful to have a functional government.

Pressure the Dems. anyway. Some of them need to grow a spine as well and they all need to stand up against this administration no matter what their party. I continue to keep contacting mine, who are Dems, as well, and I sign every petition to counter the cuts to our programs that I am handed or emailed or receive online.

When it comes to this issue NO DEMS HAVE CAVED. NONE.

The key issue IMHO is national security. Musk and tariffs are gaining strength. Congress is off two weeks. These Congressional Republicans are affected by their donors and constituents. Only takes a few.

I have always been a registered independent. And I’ve voted 3rd party on 4-5 occasions. I listen to what people say AND then I watch what they actually DO. And I expect those two behaviors to align.

Unfortunately the chasm between the two has widened, particularly with the impact of MAGA trumpism over the past 10 years. Now anything goes. Grabbing women by their genitals and making fun of disabled, lying, cheating, stealing, breaking the law, have all somehow become, not only acceptable, but expected, and even celebrated!

Politicians are held less accountable now than they’ve ever been before. A big part of the problem is campaign finance, citizens united, gerrymandering, electoral college, which have all been compromised and manipulated to created a system that relies a vote votes in specific districts in a few states, and which often reflects the will of the MINORITY rather than the majority.

So politicians now spend most of their time securing big donors instead of focusing on writing proper legislation that reflects their constituents as well as their VALUES, which they likely ran on and won.

The system is broken. Do we collectively have the desire, the stamina, the will to stand up and demand change?

Are you pro-democracy or not? If yes, cultivating the willingness to engage in real, respectful debates with fellow citizens is VITAL. As Aristotle already showed, without thriving public debate, no democracy can ever thrive - or survive.

And this is exactly what's wrong with so many "pro-democracy voters in name only" in this country. All you have to offer is cynicism.

A democracy is a government that works only FOR the people when it is BY the people. And that starts with engaging in real discussions, where no one indulges in vague "must be true because others told me" arguments...

So with that, any concrete example, at least?

If Trump & MAGA aren't stopped in the next few years the resistance is going to move from protests & online communities to an actual civil war. They're doing everything they can to stay in power indefinitely, from voter suppression, removing all checks & balances & from what we can make out election fraud with the help of Musk.

Let's hope & pray they can be removed peacefully, but if not, like any other country being oppressed whether its here in the North of Ireland or in Gaza the people will resist and take arms.

Yes, MAGA is “doing everything they can” however, they are facing strong (and increasing) pushback. Had JAN6 turned out the way Tramp and Lying Michael Flynn (among others) they wanted it to the orange idiot would have declared martial law.

His thugs failed the mission and he hit the curb. This reign of terror isn’t going to lead to civil war because the trusting souls who voted [for] him are feeling the sting of betrayal amidst the threat of losing jobs, savings and hope they may have had for retirement.

No civil war but what is happening is Project 2025 is faltering. When his insiders see him crumble and begin accusing them of being “disloyal” the tide will turn. All indicators are in favor of the Resistance.

A “malignant narcissist” is a character trait but not an official diagnosis.

It is a characteristic, however, of many cluster B personality disorders, in particular the “dark triad” disordered individuals.

Within these Cluster B’s are: antisocial personality disorder (which includes what we know as psychopaths and sociopaths), narcissistic personality disorder, histrionic personality disorder, borderline personality disorder…they are not mutually exclusive and often coexist. Donald Trump has had more books written about him by historians, expert political analysts, and mental health experts including > 50 psychiatrists who signed a DUTY TO WARN. A duty to warn the public is a serious matter and should be acknowledged with the care and respect it deserves. These experts did not come forward lightly.

Are we really going to continue to ignore these early signs of impending doom to a free society and democratic nation? We are on the precipice of an authoritarian regime. We have already transitioned from a democracy into an anocracy since Trump took office. We are now a hybrid (half democracy/half autocracy) due to the rule of law being ignored by Trump’s administration.

If immediate accountability of this administration isn’t taken, and he continues to be allowed to violate the Constitution, in 1-4 weeks we can easily become a full autocratic dictatorship. Not even the most extreme authoritarian citizens will enjoy that. They just don’t care today, by the time they do, it will be too late.

Our constitutional liberties are on the line.

I'm 66, so I understand what you mean, although in my case it's just sadness understanding how long it takes to rebuild after a crisis. But I have to do what I can even if I don't get to see the result.

I grew up as the white kid watching how my black neighbors got treated in the 60s. I have not stood down during my life either, and I'm not about to now. Fwiw, my uncle was one of the troops that liberated a camp, and he would never speak of it. He was traumatized just by seeing what others had suffered. I won't disgrace his memory by failing now either. We've already started down the path of evil by having an offshore concentration camp. I refuse to call it a "prison".
