It's not "just" the economy but I guess I wonder why any competent person (think doctors, engineers, computer whizzes, etc) take a chance on coming to work in America, even if trump leaves office it will always be possible that someone else like him will come to power. The world does not need nearly as much unskilled labor as what the US seems to want to encourage, even factory jobs that used to be relatively unskilled will be phased out and replaced by AI. Or A ONe. Bill Gates projected that in 10 years most jobs that we know now will be done by AI. That may not be true, but may not be far off and the jobs we need to work with AI will need folks with critical thinking skills, and those folks are not going to want to come here and those here may not want to stay. My grandchildren already have plans to relocate to another country. I think it is very very hard to rebuild trust...there may be superficial trust and agreements that work ok but that other nations are not actually relying on.
It makes me sad to think that our immigrant ancestors came to America in the hopes of escaping despots and to better their lives and now their descendants want to leave for the same reasons.
I agree. And also that the sons and daughters of immigrants are now the ones that are treating other immigrants with such cruelty. And the trump family hasn't been here all that long.
So true. I am only 2nd generation and don't even know, for sure, if the grandparents of my mother were here legally or not. They originally immigrated to Canada; but, had two of their many children in the USA. All, but one, of my mother's siblings became American citizens. The other relatives still live in Canada.
Since when does getting speeding tickets mark someone as a criminal "demanding" that they be deported, even if they are legally here?
I am not sure what I am...my mother was a Canadian and she did not become a citizen but was here legally from 1945 until her death in 2003. My father's family is one of the FFV, First Families of Virginia and has been here since at least 1716 (that's as early as I can trace back). I happen to be a naturalized Canadian citizen because I am the daughter of a Canadian citizen. So am I a first generation immigrant? Or a 10th immigration citizen? If I am the daughter of a Canadian citizen born in the US, does that make my citizenship a birthright citizenship even though my father was an American citizen? If I were picked u for speeding or just coming across the border ICE folks would have no idea about my heritage since I sure look to be all American..no reason to suspect I might be a birthright American.
Your post immediately made me think of Stalin's 5 year plans. A few paragraphs from this site:
"As historian Stephen Kotkin notes, "The Soviet Union was like a submarine. The plan was to go full speed ahead, no matter what the obstacles… even if the ship took on water."[^1]"
"The plan also coincided with the rise of Stalin‘s cult of personality, as he was increasingly portrayed as the wise, all-knowing leader guiding the country towards socialism. Historian Isaac Deutscher describes how "the Stalin cult was built up to monstrous proportions" during this period, with "his portraits and statues everywhere, his name constantly invoked and praised."[^7]"
"As historians continue to grapple with this complex legacy, the first Five Year Plan serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of unchecked state power and the subordination of human rights to abstract economic and political goals. It is a story of grand ambitions and even grander tragedies, one that still holds crucial lessons for our understanding of the Soviet experience and the broader history of the twentieth century."
the monster evil stalin amounts to the same evil of hitler 'cause stalin's-his derivatives' evil has lasted longer and is the source point of all post-WW2, I repeat, of all post-WW2 scourges throughout the world.

The topper is involuntary servitude in an axis of evil.
