Thank you for saying that - as a German who has many US friends I have not a single one saying they agree with or support the orange felon, Musk, Vance, Thiel, and his sycophants. Germany has to do more to cooperate with NATO, but there is a historic reason why Germany, after the second WW, was pushed towards a very peaceful country that used to be sceptical when it comes to the military. That changes more and more, particularly after Russia started its war against Ukraine. Further, as someone who is very much interested in US culture I came (once again) across a song that may become more and more relevant IF Trump's regime is getting stronger. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DGY9HvChXk

It is not productive to contact members of Congress that are not yours. Your comments do not concern them because you don't have any impact on their jobs, which is all they care about. If they're in a solid red state, a bunch of Blues contacting them will be ignored. Your comments may or may not be forwarded to your rep. If you want to do something productive rather than just feel-good with your time, contact your own members of Congress repeatedly.

I realize my remarks can be discouraging. They're meant to get people to look at the reality of the mess we're in rather than just making warm, fuzzy comments or wasting their time on stuff that doesn't make a difference. If you're doing something because your conscience demands it, that's one thing. If you want to do something that will have an effect outside yourself, you have to think differently. Ex: boycott Amazon. If it feels like the right thing to do, so it. If you think Bezos, with his 242,000,000,000 USD is going to miss a few million, think again.

And yes, consider the source. My grandparents' country was occupied by the Nazis. They were fortunate and got out before 25,000 of their fellow citizens were starved to death for resisting fascism. I have worked in D. C. as well as being an AUSA in a purple state. So perhaps I have a different mindset than many people here from both a practical and historical perspective.

This would trigger NATO Article 5, and I do not think that Russia can afford to have another frontline, irrespective of the US's likely abstention. After all, the UK and France are nuclear powers, and Russia's economy is already down the toilet - so another war would threaten Putin's survival (he does not care about Russia, but about his own and, perhaps to a certain extent, his family's well-being). However, if Ukraine is given up by the US, Putin will use his then renewed and increasing power to destabilise more and more countries of the EU. Hungary is essentially a Russian ally, the same seems to apply more and more to Slovakia even though there is more opposition than in Hungary. Also, most radical parties (in Germany, Italy, France, Austria, Romania, Bulgaria,...) are very pro-Russian/Putin. I'd rather expect these countries to adopt Russian policies and lose strength as a Union, in the NATO, and this is cheaper and perhaps more effective than waging another war. However, on the short run, I do expect Russia to start another invasion of Ukraine from Belarus. That country is much closer to Kiev and the industry centres of Ukraine. Russia will try to get hold of Ukraine, because the current US administration will most likely abandon it, unfortunately and very, very sadly, blaming Zelensky for his refusal to accept Putin keeping the occupied territories, not returning the stolen children of Ukrainian parents, and not paying restitutions. Already, Trump has never condemned Putin, but rather Ukraine for the war...what do you expect?

I am not talking about Russia ‘s intent. I am talking about their ability to actually “roll” through Poland. Do you think Poland will just say “uncle”? And that the other Baltic states, Czechia and Finland will just watch?

Expand full comment
Dana's avatar

While Poland is working on possessing a robust and modern military, the combined strength of Poland, Finland, and Czechia alone may not suffice to counter a full-scale Russian invasion. (Finnish military is ranked 48th globally and I think Czech Republic is 53rd; USA is ranked 1st, then China, then Russia). However, the strategic advantage lies in their NATO membership.

Expand full comment
Anna Oba's avatar

I don’t want to belabour this as a face to face conversation would be more constructive. Russia can’t even make it through Ukraine. And perhaps, more importantly, should Russians somehow make it through Ukraine and enter Poland, will Germany just stand by and worry about the Russians making it over their border or will you immediately come to Poland’s assistance?
