Ben — Suggestions on how states should assert their power are needed as a “counter coup.” This could be something like “The Government Shutdown Protection Act of 2025” that would automatically divert all federal revenues to states in the event of a shutdown or loss of services due to DOGE and for two years thereafter. If you take CA, NY, WA, IL and a couple others this would be $1 Trillion or more. If the government reopens, then there could be a negotiation about what programs are funded. The two years would help Congress have a focus on governing rather than gainful grifting and social media.

I am so glad I am now living in New York. I moved up here from South Carolina where Lyndsey Graham is respected. I would send him weekly emails telling him what a dirtbag he is. I'm sure my emails were deleted. I am proud of the representatives here who are fighting for us - the hard working American people. The oligarchs would have nothing without us. I am not purchasing anything other than groceries and food for my cats and horse. I have already closed my Amazon account. I am seriously thinking of trading my iPhone in for a Samsung phone and closing all Apple accounts. There are things we the people can do and that is by hitting the oligarchs in their pockets.

Amazon is the only one left on my list to cancel out. I had so many things on auto-ship because it's convenient in my rural setting, I didn't think I could do it, but I'm finding that what I was ordering is available directly from the companies; no need to go through Amazon. Readiness for the Feb 28 boycott is looking good!

Good for you! I've avoided Amazon almost from the get-go because they stole/co-opted the name of Amazon Bookstore in Minneapolis (I'm a former feminist bookseller) and because the rise of the billionaires, including Bozo, was becoming more and more dangerous. I live in a small-town area with no chain stores in the vicinity, so over the years I've sought out alternatives to Amazon, Walmart, and the other behemoths. It does take a little work and a little patience (like do I ever really *need* overnight delivery? <g>) but supporting small- to mid-size businesses is so worth it.

I live rural as well. It pained me to think of people who would suffer due to job loss at Amazon. However..by buying elsewhere, jobs will open up in those places. And I take comfort that other businesses will need to hire workers.

People shouldn't cut off their nose despite their face .yes I agree on that point.

I used to spend around 700.00 a month at Amazon. No lie. My last order came in yesterday..which was nothing really, just very slow in coming

I have done a very good job sourcing the product I used to buy from amazon. And I am and will continue to be happy with my decision. My last straw was seeing bozo cozy up to ump at his inauguration....

I’m on a ‘buy nothing but food and gas’ 1 year challenge right now. I slipped up and bought a book last week but am plugging away.

Financially, I’m banking through a credit union where 100% of my paycheck comes in and goes out — necessary living expenses, retirement funds, and cash for food and gas. Keeping debit card at home and cc’s at zero balance. One credit card in my wallet for emergencies. Not using them for anything anymore — even the slimy ‘rewards’.

WOW! This person really gets it. Put a crimp in the profits of monolithic, conglomerate businesses.

If they see their profits decreasing, they will fire people, yes-a temporary problem but labor shortages will help them get another job, BUT they must lower prices, change their PR, divest companies they own etc.

I'm using cash now whenebver I can-no credit cards. That should lower prices because businesses pay credit card companies a fee.

I'm changing my banking to credit unions which guarantees their deposits themselves and doesn't depend on FDIC, which has come to trump/Musk attention as a way to cut government spending.

Called Apple tech support for a question about an Apple device; the first thing on their recorded message went something like this: "Please be nice to our advisors." This was new. Had to wait a total of 1.75 hours to get someone who could help. I was very polite to her, but couldn't resist unloading about my disappointment that Tim Cook paid millions to the orange monkey and attended the coronation. Told her it was a disgrace and that I'd never buy an iPhone because Apple lost all my trust in one day -- and it will take years to earn it back, if ever. I suspect I wasn't the only one complaining given her responses.

The oligarchs have so much money that you can't "hit them in their pockets." Their hedge funds, off-shore accounts -- does anyone have Swiss accounts any more? -- stock portfolios, massive real estate holdings, etc., all shield them from economic harm. If your moral compass tells you to stop buying Amazon or Apple, by all means, do so, but realize that you won't be hurting the oligarchs. I wasted hundreds of dollars supporting Blue candidates across the U.S., knowing the money would be wasted, but I did it for my conscience. And by the way, are you sure Samsung is worthy of your business? Or are they also members of the oligarchy?

This is what I have been thinking on. I’m in the process of writing to my Governor, Gavin Newsom, to suggest a plan for all blue state Governors coming together to stop/block any taxes from leaving their states. California alone is the 5th largest economy in the world, and as Canada has begun an assault on the constituencies that voted the 🍊🤡 into office, blue states can start doing the same and keep all taxes collected in the states with no funding going to red states. Republicans would never be able to hide the fact that most red states are literal welfare states and are funded by the successful running of blue states under Democratic Governors. The maga haze and the blinding curtain of maga lies will effectively and factually be ripped away for everyone to see the world over.

Expand full comment
Beth's avatar

I'm from NH. I wrote Governor Newsom a letter last week, suggesting the same thing. The only thing that Trump and Musk understand is money. The way things are going, it feels as though my measly tax dollars are going to directly and indirectly land in Musk and Trumps pockets. So, I've been fantasizing the idea of a nation wide tax revolt. If Dems and Independents refrained from filing taxes, that would be less money to finance their whims. The reduced number of IRS workers would be hard-pressed to come after our us.

I’d love to delay paying taxes so no money goes to the 🍊🤡🎪 admin and into the billionaires pockets however, you will get fines and penalties that add interest compounded everyday you don’t pay, here in CA that is fact. Also, change W-2 at work to deductions that are the number of people on your IRS form. Change from 0 to 1, 2, 3 4 whatever the number you claim on IRS form, so they take less taxes out of your pay, and file an estimated tax every quarter just keep up with what you may owe. ME-I am retired and only do estimated tax payments every quarter and once trump/GOP got elected I never paid my last installment and fiddled with my taxable income before 12/31/2024 enough so I only owe $95.

Next year, I will do no estimated taxes and pay that penalty or pay less than I should as I plan for end of year IRS taxes

Expand full comment
Oaktown's avatar

Money is what gives them power and they care very much about wielding that power.

Expand full comment
Dik de Bruijn's avatar

Absolutely correct. But they have so much money, there's very little that can affect the money-power connection. Musk has approx. 392,000,000,000 USD. Do you think losing a few million -- or even 100 million -- will make any difference to him? It might hurt his ego a little -- maybe even a lot -- but it won't change how much power he has.

Expand full comment
Oaktown's avatar

True, but one can always hope the old saying holds: A fool and his money are soon parted.

Expand full comment
Becca's avatar

It is doable but difficult. People would have to be educated about how and why changes to the way you do your IRS taxes can give away less to Red States and do good at the same time. IF you itemize your deductions on IRS forms with property/car tax, state sales/local taxes or state income tax, etc. every contribution to a qualified charity is deductible-most often up to 60% of your AGI.-have to check that out if you donate big amounts. Every $1 you give will reduce the IRS taxes you owe and you will support a charity that tries to better peoples' lives. I'm not going to live forever and I'm more worried about our nation than I am about inheritances for relatives at this point. WE are in a COUP. Perhaps, state income taxes could allow more of a tax credit for charities that work for the benefit of that state's population to offset the amount people give to charities. I'm not a tax expert but have done my own taxes for decades and have studied the few loopholes an ordinary person can still use. Blue donor states can manipulate their income taxes to keep more wealth/benefit in-state. VT has 4 Charities with VT children, veterans, environment, non-game wildlife listed that help keep VT $$ at home and lower your IRS taxes if you itemize.

Taxes have become much more complicated over the decades but adding another wrinkle is doable and keep your $$ at home.

They purposely fund little of their own programs so FEDS give them more money. Meanwhile, with low state income taxes they attract businesses and wealthy tax evaders.

CA, NY, VT, MA, NJ, CT, OR, CO, WA would all probably vote to secede. Whether it would be successful or not, it is worth a try!

I really like the idea of Blue states seceding, but what do you do about having non-contiguous states in the seceding group? I can see people in the 2 coastal areas pulling it together -- though some people in eastern OR want that part of the state to become part of ID -- but I'm guessing CO, stuck in a sea of red states, would find it tough to get the idea of secession supported. Today marks 35 Days since Nelson Mandela was released from Prison. #aparteid. A little homework:

What connections do Musk and Trump have with South Africa ?

What evidence is there that they are for or against apartheid?

I started watching and listening to you guys and gals quite a while ago. The reason I found you compelling was that you’re lawyers. You understand civics- The things that make you who you are, and what makes you believable. Believability is a big part of the problem with news these days. I think it’s worthwhile to consider reminding people once in a while, as your reach expands, of who you are.

The fascist overthrow of the government started on 21 January and is continuing. I hope things will fall apart, but I don't think it's time to paint a rosy picture of the outcome just yet.

🔸️NONE of the big blubbery baby man's clown show would be happening if he was disqualified day one after forensic psychiatrist Dr Bandy X Lee's report of the FIVE DANGEROUS MENTAL PATHOLOGIES of Donald Trump.

That and if Mitch would’ve had a pair when it counted!

A) The allowance of a liberal leaning justice for SCOTUS(even if we disagree with his process) B) If he’d have not flipped after voicing utter contempt at 45, that he alone was responsible for Jan 6(something repugnants white wash now that 45 2.0 is there) and progressed with the impeachment proceedings…regardless if civilian. C) Recognized, as an equal section of government that something was amiss with Aileen Cannon…(the last judge appointed to Federal Court by 45) and her judicial ethics was skewed. D) Putting country over party to work with “his long time friend” Schumer in finding a way to not allow what happened by throwing his influence toward candidates that put country over party!

It’s true! Every time I thought Merric Garland would do the right thing.. he would surprise me and acquiesce. Traitor..

They just didn’t want Obama to get what he wanted. Obama was loved world round, still is.
